I was wondering who out there does the Santa thing for there kids, who does not, and why. I can see the argument against it, setting your kid up to believe in something that is illogical, etc, and the parallels to religion.

Santa does come to our house. We have a 3.5 year old son and a 7 month old daughter. Last Christmas was the first year my son had any concept of the holiday, and he was excited. This year he is absolutely ecstatic. He absolutely loves Santa. While waiting to see Santa this year, my son and Mr. Claus made eye contact while we were in line. Santa smiled and waved to him, and the huge ear to ear grin on my son's face was absolutely priceless to me. My son brings Santa up daily at our house, and his excitement really does make the holidays that much brighter for our family.

For those other atheists that celebrate Christmas, does Santa visit your house? I personally see it as harmless fun that the kids will naturally grow out of. How much fun is life without a little mystery and magic?

What is wrong with making people happy? I may not be a believer, but I feel like it is not for me to tell others that they shouldn't.

We do Christmas and Santa. The kids have a blast, and we have fun doing it. That's all that matters.

I was just curious. I know some atheists who will not promote things that aren't true.

I was referring to the belief in a magical being that essentially works miracles.

Truth and belief aren't always the same. Fantasy is fine!

My kids think dinosaurs are still alive. They watch Transformers and think my car is really a secret robot that hides when I'm around and comes alive for them when I'm gone. They also think a monster lives in the basement, but it's the coolest monster alive. We play along with some of these beleifs because the kids have fun with it.

They are going to figure out the reality of our world one day. Why should I ruin their fun in the meantime. No way am I going to tell a 3 yr old that Santa isn't real just because "atheist".

I didn't do the Santa thing even when I was a Christian. My kids had a terrific fun time at Christmas just the same. I made it fun for them and I got all the credit, not Santa, bwuh-ha-ha-ha!
