Great thread! Here are my favorites:

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesman and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Whatever makes us jump back seems at the very least worthy of being examined carefully for its potential usefulness." - Clarissa Pinkola Estes

“The life which is unexamined is not worth living."
Plato, APOLOGY OF SOCRATES

Great ideas often receive violent opposition from mediocre minds. – Albert Einstein

Don't be afraid to go out on a limb. That's where the fruit is. – H. Jackson Browne

Most people would die sooner than think; in fact, they do. – Bertrand Russell

Men scorn what they don't understand.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1859-193 The sign of Four

"The foolish and the dead alone never change their opinions."
James Russel Lowell

Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul.
Mark Twain

Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.--Frank Zappa

You can see a lot by looking. - Yogi Berra

All men now live through too much and think through too little. - Friedrich Nietzsche

I'm not sure if they're all necessarily atheist quotes, but they seem relevant.

I want you to know, when it comes to believing in god- I really tried. I really really tried. I tried to believe that there is a god who created each one of us in his own image and likeness, loves us very much and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize...something is ****ED-UP. Something is WRONG here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is NOT good work. If this is the best god can do, I am NOT impressed. Results like these do not belong on the resume of a supreme being. This is the kind of **** you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would have been out on his all-powerful-ass a long time ago. [George Carlin, from "You Are All Diseased".]
