I was told today I was a “Bright” (used as a noun not an adjective). I had to go look it up, and it seems to be one of the new terms for non religious people is “Bright’. I found their web site and it is listed with as an organization with what looks like political goals. Their web site is www.the.brights.net They are defined as people who have a naturalistic worldview, are free of supernatural and mystical elements, and their ethics and actions are based on a naturalistic worldview. Their goals are to promote the civic understanding, acknowledgment of the naturalistic worldview, which is free of supernatural and mystical elements, gain public recognition with those persons who hold such a worldview and can bring principled actions to bear on matters of civic importance, and educate society toward accepting the full and equitable civic participation of all such individuals. I think it is there effort to be political recognized.

Anybody on the A&A forum have any information on them?

I'm aware of the term, but from what I can tell the use of the term "Bright" doesn't seem really to have caught on.

Skeptics, doubters, non believers, atheists, and those of a scientific orientation do seem to be coming out of the closet, as it were, though.

btw - the website you quoted is for a lighting store.
You want http://the-brights.net/

I never heard of them.

But then, I never minded being called bright.

It seems to me that, if I were truly bright, then someone other than I would be making the allegation.

"enlightenment" has more than one meaning. Other languages have different terms for that.

the Brights are a rather new movement - in order to find out its multilayered purpose, you may need more information than this:

I've heard that term a few times over the past few years. I don't particularly care for trendy new words or phrases because they seem very shallow to me. This one has never caught on and I hope it doesn't. Afterall, it's just a word and when you hear the word bright you immediately associate it with intelligence (he's a really bright guy) and I've heard a few atheists criticize that rather arrogant sounding word to describe someone who's not religious on a couple of websites and as I recall, also on a documentary on tv a couple of years ago.

I don't think your bright sir, compassionate and understanding, but not bright. More sensitive to the issues but not insightful for any honest reflection.
