When I give presents on Christmas, and children ask me "Why do I get presents?" I don't tell them "Because Santa thought you were good...."
Be blunt and truthful...
"People give you presents because they love you"
The truth is so beautiful

The believers who are respectful we never meet, because they keep their beliefs private. So all we know are the ones with self-esteem problems who feel the need to dominate and convert to assuage their own self-worth.

It's a good idea for children to learn that there are people out there who will mislead them, and that not everything they hear is true, even from people they trust. It is better for them to learn this while they are still children with a parent to look out for their best interests, rather than later when they can get into real trouble. It's part of growing up.

You want vapid children ? Teach them to believe in wal mart, and Exxon, Mc donalds, mindless TV shows. Teach them that it's ok to step on the little guy, because "getting ahead is everything" and that the almighty dollar is king ! Family values without a sky daddy. I dunno..I will keep my sky daddy, and still not be a christian. There is something lacking when I put humans on a pedestal. Humans aren't able to stop fighting, so, I worship the lorakeet ! All hail sky daddy of mine, and the colors in the lorakeet ! The athiests can reap what they sow, and I do know some fine athiests. However, I prefer my space cadets, because they have open minds. It's a waste of time to try and change people. Let them gloat, either way.

Curious little article. This really makes you wonder, "Seventy-five percent of Americans are God-fearing Christians; 75 percent of prisoners are God-fearing Christians. Ten percent of Americans are atheists; 0.2 percent of prisoners are atheists." I wonder where he got those statistics.
I never could teach my children to believe in Santa, et al. How could I possibly expect them to be honest if I started out their young lives by lying to them. Besides, why should kids be good for Santa? He's not buying the presents -- why should he get the credit?

For me the whole experience of transitioning from the toothferry/santa and the easter bunny was not as painful as some people's posts reveal. It was an automatic transition into reality and today I believe in God . I never felt 'lied' to at all. My take on things again, is that children have imaginations and feeding those imaginations is what makes a child a child. As kids we watched cartoons, and fairy tales, was read fairy tales, and to me it was part of my process as a child. So, are we going to not have our children read fairy tales, because it is lies? Surely those fairy tales have comforting memories as well. Feeling loved, protected, believing that anything is possible. I do understand why people are feeling that they cheat their kids into believing things that are not real, but I also know that those are the fondest memories we carry from our childhood.
