It is the most overrated place in atlanta

the food is meh

service is ugh

But i still get dragged there whenever out of town people are visiting. I just no longer buy anything.. just sit there and wait for them to finish so we can go

Apparently it's not overrated. It's been around for 3 generations....and it serves over 20K people a day. They must be doing something right, to be "overrated".

But than again, I hear people say that about Atlanta. I still don't get that.

As a second generation of Varsity lovers raising the third - I have to say the onion rings and frosted oranges are absolutely the best !!

I think the charm behind The Varsity is its old-fashion hometown grease-trapiness. In this age of bigger splashier corporatized fast foods & extreme anal adherence to tofu-style living and a nearly fanatical avoidance of transfat products at all costs, it's cool to have a restaurant that still reminds us of the yesteryears when life were supposedly simpler & innocent.

At least that's how I see the whole phenomena behind The Varsity. If I am wrong, someone feel free to chime in, eh?

The dogs are okay, but the atmosphere is classic- you have to go to the original at least once. Have also gone to the Alpharetta location which is suburban sanitized and a good place to take kids/teens for hot dog fix. I like their frozen orange drink. Very refreshing on a hot day.

These comments are so funny. I guess you can infer that The Varsity is not to everyone's taste, and you would be right. I can't handle the onion rings (way too breaded and greasy), but the chili dogs are a total guilty pleasure for me.

Agreed.

Good post.

My Varsity faves...

Peach Pie.
Chili Dogs.
Fries.

I've only been to the original once, and, like I said above, it was in 10th grade. How do the other locations compare?

I'm also wondering how 5 Guys compares to the Varsity as far as the grease-factor goes, because I went to the one in Windward with my brother and was amazed at how much grease soaked through the bag! 0.o

Once was enough as far as the Varsity goes. My sons love Five Guys, but I'm with you Neemy! Fast food is fast food, no matter how they try to gussy it up.
