Hi all,

I'm going to be attending Emory for grad school beginning this fall and am actually going to Atlanta today to try to find an apartment. I've been browsing the forums and there has been a lot of helpful information about housing in Decatur/Atlanta. The consensus seemed to be that living in Decatur, particularly around Emory, is safe. My primary concern in looking for an apartment is safety. I'm willing to up the price that I pay for a 1 BR to ensure safety/security (I'd pay up to 1200ish). I've visited the area twice (most recently in April) and it seemed ok to me. However, I've been reading apartment reviews about many of the apartment complexes within the Emory area (Gables Rock Springs, Paces Park, Highland Square, etc...all of which seem to be pricey/luxury apts) and was surprised to find at least a few reviews for each complex where tenants indicate both car and apartment break-ins to be common. I even read a few (perhaps this was for the Heights at Clairmont...a little further away) reviews saying these apt complexes were right next to crack houses.

Now, I lived in a college town in Charlottesville, VA for undergrad and currently live in an extremely safe city 3 miles out from DC, so I'm not used to having to expect break-ins. I understand there's no way to be 100% sure but I'd like to find a place where break-ins hardly occur and are the rare exception rather than the norm. So my question is--is it possible to find some place like this in the Emory area (i've also been looking in Va Highlands), or is that just a fact of life there?

If anyone has any input on which specific areas around decatur/Emory are safer than the others (e.g. east of this street is unsafe, etc), or even specific apartment complexes in mind, your help would be greatly appreciated. Any input in general regarding the security/crime situation would be awesome. Sorry for the long post and please let me know if you need more details.

Thanks!

I just moved out of a complex on Briarcliff near Emory. The apartment ratings for the complex were like the ones you are looking at. Several mentions of break ins, car thefts, etc. However, I lived there for just under two years and never heard of a break in, never saw a broken window on a car or building, never even saw the police in the complex. I'm sure it is possible a break in happened while I was there, I just never saw it or heard of it from my neighbors or the property management. If you are worried about it my advice would be to get a unit thats not on the ground floor and make sure your car has an alarm. You should be fine.

Thanks--my car does have an alarm for what it's worth. Yeah, sometimes I wonder if management from other rival apt complexes post on the ratings sites because the reviews sometimes just seem very harsh and not credible.

If you read about crack houses at Clairmont--that is insane.

There is one extended stay motel at Clairmont at I85--scheduled to close within the year--that has been in the news for 'crime'. Next door to that I believe there are some luxury apts--unless it was that, I have no clue. I am certain that DeKalb County PD keep an eye on these areas.

The Emory/Decatur/Northlake area is very safe.

Lots of interest in this area right now--it is going to be developed and there are many concerned citizens.

There MIGHT be crack houses if you take Clairmont all the way to the Fiesta Mall/Peachtree-Dekalb Airport area, but that is a long way from Emory.

only a hop, skip and a jump--I guess I'm just used to it. Grew up there. Briarcliff High School alum.

Things are going pretty well for this area--the old Pike's was torn down last winter/spring and something big is going to be built there. I forget.

The older subdivisions along Buford Hwy--north of Clairmont, towards Shallowford are cashing in on the 'Intown' cachet. Prices going up.

Throughout the past decade there has been some serious work done by churches and others in this community.

'Infill' housing. That is what is going to happen. There was a meeting last night--not sure how many neighborhoods were represented--Echo Lake and others... close to Shallowford...

I guess this will be classified as either 'Lenox' or part of 'The Emory Corridor'.

How I would love to know what is planned.

I've lived at Post Briarcliff (not even two miles from Emory) for almost two years now. My car was stolen from right in front of my apartment a couple of months after I moved in (so much for extra security at a gated community). Around the same time, there were quite a few break-ins into cars all over the apartment complex.

In April of this year, we had 8 break-ins into apartments in just one day (yes, 8 in one day). A week or so later, during a residents' meeting on the issue, we found out that there had been several other burglaries going as far back as September or October of last year. Nobody informed us about that. The fact that your management doesn't tell you about incidents of that nature, doesn't mean that they're not happening.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to scare anybody and I'm not saying that this area is terrible. However, I'm not at all surprised about those reports...

Arrow Good to know

I guess the proximity to the interstate is a factor--who knows.

Lots of development going on--and more planned.

Hope someone is giving this consideration.

FYI--for those who live/drive in this area--Immaculate Heart of Mary/church is ready to begin construction on a new facility. Hopefully to be completed by falll--so there could be 'delays'..

sls

Well, I capitalized might because I knew it was a BIG "might" and not at all a certainty. Clairmont at P'tree Dekalb Airport is about as far as you can get from Emory and still be on Clairmont Road. Not far in terms of mileage from Emory, but not exactly a place that's known for Emory student housing either.

I would say finding a gated appartment complex within a decent area will meet your needs.
