In suburban Atlanta, I had taught ESL at a private vocational school about 10 years ago and was paid about $13 per hour and I had already obtained my master's degree. I hate to guess that the pay would not to be too much higher now, but you would get your foot in the door that could lead to other jobs.

i'm curious, what was a typical work day like for you? did you have classes all day? every day? weekends? did you have benefits?

how many hours/classes did you have per week? what were the classroom sizes???

The classes were smaller, maybe up to 10 students (adult learners) during the week. I taught about 4 hours in the morning. No benefits. I had another job there, too, so was just short of full time work. I think I got in about 30 hours a week. While I enjoyed it, I eventually moved on to other unrelated work because of more pay.

SW30303,

was there any room to move up, or was "teacher" the only job available?

The private vocational school I worked at had severe financial problems at the time and was laying off staff (plus our paychecks were sometimes late), so chances of moving up were slim at that time for me. Hopefully, you will have better luck with schools than I had for ESL.

I also taught other types of vocational classes too, on a part time basis, but the teaching route did not go well for me, so I jumped into an unrelated field when the opportunity came.

I had a colleague from college who taught ESL in Slovakia for a few years, he then came to Atlanta seeking related work (ESL) (which was hard to find), but got into something else unrelated while attending graduate school. He now works at a university in the business college (public policy).

Good luck!
