Yesterday, I was looking at real estate while driving down East Lake Dr. along Oakhurst and East Lake, and down 2nd Ave. along Oakhurst and Kirkwood. One thing that I noticed was that on the homes for sale on East Lake Dr. were priced around $200k to 275k on the East Lake (City of Atlanta) side, while comparable homes on the Oakhurst (City of Decatur) side where priced around $350 to $390. This was true for several different homes in that area. Why do you think that is so?

Also, I was wondering what the relationship is like between the older black families that have been in the areas for decades and the newer population that has arrived partially due to gentrification.

IMO, it's all about the City of Decatur school system. Good school system drive up the price of homes. That is why you will see real estate agents list the schools in their listings. Some families look for specific elementary school(s). Oakhurst is part of the City of Decatur's school system.

True. But they also list the schools on the Kirkwood and East Lake flyers and listings (seemingly as a selling point). People on this forum generally seem to think highly of Grady High. Is it that the City of Atlanta elementary and middle schools perform poorly in Kirkwood and East Lake?
