Journalistically speaking, it's ABSOLUTELY a conflict of interests. Anyone that's been through a decent j-school could tell you that. Just because others have had similar conflicts in the past doesn't mean this isn't one, and just because she's a good person doesn't mean it wouldn't be unethical. A person's generalized character doesn't change the objective ethicality of any particular action. She would be in the direct position to report on her husband's actions and the actions of his organization - the only clearer conflict of interest that I can think of would be Pearson (I always want to call her Monica Kaufman, just like I still want to call Macy's Rich's) covering something that she herself did.

But as a previous poster pointed out, she's retiring in 2012, so it's a moot point.

I don't think that the Journalism schools are the problem. The problem is this culture in America of allowing Corporations & money to rule over every aspect of our lives. In this age of the deregulated FCC and the conglomeration of mass media, journalists have no choice but to tow the company line, unfortunately.

Things like ethics, consistency, and just plain good ol' fashion gumshoe journalism gets lost in the shuffle of seeking those advertisement dollars. Even though Monica Pearson retires in 2012, that's still ONE year that she has of potentially violating the ethics of journalism. One year is one too many in my book.

I was mostly just trying to illustrate that these types of issues are very much Journalism Ethics 101 - this is a textbook case of ethical impropriety.

As for the rest of your post - agreed. And TV "journalism" has some of the WORST offenders. It's rare that I watch any TV news anymore, it's very much an entertainment-driven medium that has a vested interest in keeping us scared and poorly informed. There's very little actual journalism to be found anymore.
