Coming to town this weekend 7 & 8 Aug, looking for somewhere to have a few drinks and socialize in the evening, that a working class guy can feel comfortable in. From all the searching I have done, Johnny's Hideaway seems to be the only place for older folks, but I also read that ownership has changed recently and one poster at a site claimed there were several fights there. Any help on a casual relaxed place to hang out? Thanks

Vinings Inn and Hal's are usually the other 2 that I hear of. I've been to vinings inn and its pretty cool.

There are a zillion places like that in the burbs. Try Jimiz or Blackstone's in the Vinings area, or maybe Five Seasons on Roswell Road. Intown has many 40+ hangouts but they are probably a little dressier.

thanks for the replies, however after looking at the websites I saw the ones listed in the first reply were restaurants with bars. I guess Johnny's is as well but people mention the food as an aside in the posts I read. Also, I am staying in Buckhead, and will be visiting downtown also. So kind of looking for a place more club than restaurant if anyone else has suggestions. Thanks.

Jimiz and Blackstones have very active bars with tons of people in the 40+ crowd hanging out. If you're in Buckhead you might check out Shula's or Dantanna's. I'm not sure what you mean by "working class guy." All of these places are casual bars but they're not like longshoreman's or truck drivers' spot. There are places like that on the west side off Fulton Industrial.

working class meaning I am not a city guy making 6 figures, just an older guy lower middle class, but I clean up well, have a bit of education and taste, but I can't stand the idea of being around yuppies or snobs with money. I am in my upper 40s so I don't want to go somewhere an older person might feel out of place. Not really looking for a dive either, although I have been through some pretty rough ones in my earlier years, but I prefer to act civilized nowadays and not as wild as when I was younger. Thanks for all your help.

I hear you. It's too bad Atlanta doesn't offer more options along those lines. In the 70s and 80s Buckhead had plenty of bars that would fit the bill but the scene has gradually drifted toward more suburban locations. You can still find plenty of laid back places that don't have snobs with money but unfortunately there may be younger people around.

You'd love Jimiz or Blackstone's if you don't mind the cab ride. Lots of folks like you describe hanging out there.
