I'm wondering if anyone has personal experience with Laurel Heights Academy in Atlanta? I have a 15 year old son with a dual diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome and bipolar disorder, and he was recently hospitalized at Peachford after a very severe meltdown, with the recommendation of residential treatment upon release. I had been considering Laurel Heights, already, so have read up on it, prior to this incident, and, from what I've read online, it seems like a good fit for him. His insurance plan does not cover Laurel Heights, but does cover a few places in Florida. Obviously, I would rather have him be close to home, so I'm really pushing for them to make an exception for my son.

I've heard good things about the school from doctors, but wonder if anyone here has personal experience from a parent's standpoint, or even as a student, both as a school, and as a medical facility. Currently he is attending Fitzhugh Lee under the Haven program, in Smyrna. He was transferred there from Pope High School. He has made virtually no academic progress his first year at Pope, and it's too soon to see if he's made any progress at Fitzhugh Lee, since he was transferred so late in the year.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't count on the school, get involved where ever he goes. What a difference you will see

I'm already doing that, and have been since he was diagnosed at age 2. I've been his advocate in every step of his life, so far. Researching the school he attends is part of the process.
