I just relocated to Decatur from Tampa to attend Georgia Tech. I thought I had done ample research on Decatur and had even visited twice before the move, it didn't seem bad. In fact, the crime stats in Decatur were lower than SW atl or downtown. However, after a week of living here I'm almost positive I will not make it out alive.. I could really use some advice

How bad is it really?
How does Decatur compare to other metro areas?
Are there any areas I should avoid (i.e. shopping centers, parks, etc)?
Is it common to have homeless people/ crack heads walking past my house? (or did I really manage to pick the worst street possible)

I realize now that I should have visited again but now I'm stuck here for a year and would just like to know how to stay as safe as possible, any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Where exactly in Decatur are you? "Decatur" encompasses a lot of area and could mean various different things to different people depending on who you ask. There are higher-end areas... but there are definitely lower-end areas too...

My question, too...'Decatur' covers a vast area of DeKalb County, and it truly runs the gamut socioeconomically; the 'best and worst' of the metro, as it were. The city itself (30030) is relatively very safe, as are the neighborhoods to the north of there that are close to Emory University (30033). The neighborhoods to the south are another story.
One can never make the mistake of assuming that a neighborhood is safe simply because it has the name 'Decatur' attached to it. This point has been made and discussed many times on this forum.

I almost don't want to say because I'm sure I'm in a not so good area.. I'm right off of Candler-McAfee.

I'm really not "terrified" because I'm a home-body anyways but it would be nice to know what I'm actually dealing with and if I should be in the market for a gun...

Again, I'm also very interested if there are places in this neighborhood that a young female should not visit by herself. Thanks again.

Can you afford to break your lease? I would not live where I don't feel safe and you shouldn't have to either. Take care...

Get a big dog. Not a friendly looking dog. German Shepherd, Doberman, Rottweiler. I lived around the way from you for about 8 years. Good luck!

Do you live alone? Most crime in that area is property crime and drug related. Don't open your door to anyone you don't know. Be wary of anyone casing the house. Sometimes they'll park a car nearby to case houses out. Especially if there is an unoccupied home nearby. I've caught a few people walking through the yard and when confronted use some excuse like, "need your grass cut!?". Just be wary and you'll be ok. Get an alarm if you don't already.
