I'm going to a training conference in Decatur next month by myself, and will be without car, though I am staying downtown near the Decatur MARTA station. Is there much to do in Decatur? Is that area safe at night? Any good restaurants within walking distance of the MARTA station in Decatur? Or should I take the MARTA into Atlanta to dine and recreate?

There are several small restaurants and bars on the square in Decatur. Personally I prefer the Raging Burrito or the Brick Store. The Raging Burrito is an eclectic little restaurants featuring an unusual burrito menu, great margarita's and an excellent patio. The Brick Store is an English style pub with an unbelievable beer list and an excellent menu. If you are willing to walk a few blocks Taqueria Del Sol is about 4 blocks west on Ponce De Leon. Another favorite of mine, Taqueria Del Sol features enchiladas and soft tacos. Cheap and good (especially the margaritas). If these don't fit your tastes there are several other restaurants in the area. As far as safety, downtown Decatur is as safe as any other suburban town center.

Go to the Brick Store Pub, also there is Twains, a very nice little pub / pool hall. They recently redid the interior and directed it more towards families etc.

If you have the tme though, the number one thing to do in Decatur, IMO, is the Dekalb Farmer's Market. Just drop by, get something cheap to eat and a cup of coffee and soak that place in. It's truely one of the great unique features of the Atlanta area.

Also, you could jump on Marta in downtown decatur and that will take you into Atlanta proper.

Good luck.

Eddie's Attic is right off the square. They have live music most nights.

Default google City of Decatur, GA

All of the above posts make great recommendations. Feast is also a nice restaurant if you are looking for a more "formalish" atmosphere - but the prices are very reasonable.

Check out the City of Decatur website also. Google City of Decatur, GA. There is almost always some sort of festival type function going on in Decatur so you may get lucky and hit a night when sth is going on in Oakhurst or on the square in downtown Decatur. The BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival is in mid August and is a blast. They are also showing movies on the square in July I believe. You can hang out with a chair and a cooler with a nice bottle of wine and catch a movie.

Yeah, Decatur hosts tons of events. Probably more than anywhere else in Atlanta. They just had the Decatur Beach Party a couple weeks ago. They bring in truckloads of sand and dump it on the square. They also have wine and beer festivals, art festivals, concerts, etc.

Trackside Tavern is a good dive bar if you want to go to a place that is NOT kid friendly.

Thanks for the advice! Decatur sounds like a great place to live! I actually realized that one of our vendor reps lives and works in Decatur, and she's offered to take me sightseeing, so I'm set...

Heh.. Well, being that this will be one of my first treks away from my darling 21 month old child, I may just enjoy spending some time in an establishment that doesn't hand out crayons at the door... ;-)

Decatur hangs banners in the Ponce de Leon/Scott Blvd intersection/island promoting their upcoming events. (Whoever makes their banners must be making a fortune, because they're ALWAYS promoting some sort of event.) The current banner is for "Cinema in the Square".
