Midtown Place (Borders, Whole Foods, Home Depot) on Ponce is literally right next to Midtown Promenade (Midtown Arts Cinema, Trader Joes) on Monroe, and yet to go between the two you have to take a stupid trip onto major streets, adding to traffic and wasting time. Why was there no connection made during construction? Will this ever be remedied? Heck, even a straircase between the two would be nice!

In a word, as usual it was neighborhood NIMBY's. The people that live on the smalll streets east of Monroe and south of Midtown Promenade had a major meltdown at the mere mention of it.

I agree that it is absolutely ridiculous. Blame this same mentality for the cancellation of a cool little village district as part of the Beltline where it crosses Monroe & 10th.

I'm so glad you wrote about this! This has been bugging for the last 10 years (or since whenever "Midtown Place" was first built)!

But here's the thing...

They could have built a new road that went along the back of the parking lot of Midtown Place--this would then connect to the road that enters Midtown Promenade.

It would have brought connectivity, better traffic flow, less congestion, and even more business to both shopping centers...and the homes along the small streets would still not have any cut-through traffic, etc.

A name for this new road?

South Midtown Way

What about all the traffic cut-throughs this would generate? It's hard to find a parking place there already.

You would get way too much cut-through traffic if the complexes connected. It is already a homeless superhighway.

A "South Midtown Way" would not have any cut-throughs through the neighborhood. It would only connect the shopping centers (and bring increased business visibility...and be more environmentally-friendly since cars would not be required to leave Midtown Place, turn right on Ponce, then turn right on Monroe, and travel all the way back up to Midtown Promenade...)

I agree, it would actually have kept less traffic out of the residential area, if I'm going from one to the other, I don't take Ponce to Monroe, I take Ponce to Ponce Place and then left on Virgina to come in the back end where Rice Box is. In turn, doing exactly what residents should have wanted to avoid.

I've heard that the developers of Midtown Place declined to put in a walkway with steps to due to liability concerns. I agree that a simple driveway connecting the two would have been even better.

Hard to find a parking spot in the Promenade but not usually at Midtown Place, especially near Home Depot and further back in the complex which would've been the closest to where the parking is needed. Of course, that would require people walking :/
