Visited Atlanta and saw a house in Ormewood Park that we really loved (have been looking at homes in Decatur/Virginia-Highlands/Sandy Springs- price range around $1600/month for 3 bedrooms/2 baths). We didn't have a chance to really check out the neighborhood because we had to catch a flight. How safe is the area? What kind of demographic is it (we're 20-somethings college-educated liberals from LA)? Are there nice restaurants and shops in the area?

Any information would be highly appreciated.

The area is fine, near Grant Park, Cabbagetown and East Atlanta for bars and restaurants. It kind of depends on which street it's on in Ormewood. I wouldn't personally want to live too close to the Moreland and I-20, there are strays, panhandlers and such in that area that might wander into your yard/car/house. Decatur city and the Highlands would be "safer" generally speaking and the shops in those areas will be a bit higher end, but if you're used to urban living you'll be fine there.

The house is on Ormewood Ave SE, across from a church. We're coming from LA so I like to think that we're used to urban living, but I don't think strays and panhandlers wandering around in the neighborhood is something that would suit us. We're looking for a place that's gentrified - I'd like a Whole Foods close by if you know what I mean.

It's not a bad area. I live in what is considered north Ormewood Park I think. I live close to Moreland and 20 and there are a few "eccentrics" that roam the area but there's never been any problems. I do get a lot of trash in my yard from the nearby fast food chains. The area you are looking into is quite safe and just a little more gentrified than the area I'm in. It's far enough away from the commotion to not have to worry with riff-raff but close enough to entertainment and necessities.

There's no Whole Foods nearby but you have two Krogers(the one at edgewood stocks a lot of organic foods and has a swank cheese counter like one of them big ol New York city deals) within a five minute drive in either direction on Moreland and an Aldi as well. The closest Whole Foods is on Ponce which is about a 15 minute drive when traffic isn't bad. There is Sevenanda in Little Five Points which is some sort of weird hippie organic food store that gets most of it's business from weird transplanted northern Californians. It's a bit too marxist for my daily shopping needs but it may be what you're looking for. I wish they'd put a Trader Joe's somewhere in the area. Again the closest one in 15 minutes away, just down the street from Whole Foods actually.
