The traffic in Atlanta is overrated ... the issue with Atlanta traffic is the fact that you have to drive so far to get everywhere, the density isn't as bad as people make it out to be. This is coming of someone who commutes to Atlanta daily from the suburbs.
Are you from Los Angeles? I agree, Atlanta traffic is somewhat overrated, but it can be quite bad and is definitely in the top five nationally. I would rate L.A., Bay Area, NYC/L.I./NJ and then perhaps Atlanta, with D.C. not far behind.

Stay OFF I-285. While Atlanta has the worst traffic in the western hemisphere, it is faster to go through town than I-285

+1

Like I said, if you are coming through around 3PM, stay on 75S and then take the 85S exit when 75/85 split. The reason 285 stays congested is that I believe through commercial traffic must take 285 and cannot take 75 or 85 through town. Anyway, stay on 75 through town and then if you need to, catch 285 on the south side.

So, if I arrive into town around 3:30-4:00 I should take 285 to 85/75? Sorry for all the questions.

Don't arrive in town at those times if you can help it.

In all seriousness though, I am not sure any one will be better than the other. I personally would not do 285 since all through commercial traffic (big rigs) must take 285 (they cannot take 75 through the city), so that adds to congestion. However, I also know that 75S through downtown around that time can be awful. Still I would suggest taking your chances with 75 before I personally would do 285.
