Hello good people of city-data,
I may have a job in ATL and am doing some recon on where the "right" place for me and my family would be. Here are my details: 30-something, with wife and infant. Would be based out of downtown, don't mind commuting and the job would be a lot of travel around GA anyhow. In order of importance:
Walkable
Safe
older (historic)
good scene (music, arts, cafes, etc.)
ability to get a place (rent or buy) with a yard and some privacy
healthy lifestyle (organic food options, active community, etc.
liberal
[ETA more info]
1. Budget - middle of the road
2. House/Condo/Townhome? - if we buy it would be a house with 1/4 acre or more...
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) - commute
4. Children(public school vs. private) - one child, too young to worry about that
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two - country/urban (I know, kind of an oxymoron)
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? - important
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. - not an issue, as long as we are not an issue for the neighborhood.
Anything like that in or near ATL?

Middle of the road is kind of vague and could be any price range really depending on your POV. You will need to be a little more specific as this is really the determining factor with suggesting neighborhoods.

Thanks! I suppose I meant that we could probably afford a rent of up to or around $1500 and a purchase price of up to or around $250,000

The intown areas would more closely match your list --except for the price range and ability to find larger yards/more privacy.
Stone Mountain and Lawrenceville have small historic downtown areas and IIRC, Smyrna has a town center. There would be several shops and restaurants but the intown area is more developed in that respect. There are health food stores throughout the metro area--and Whole Foods--there might be some driving involved if you live in the suburbs.
Gwinnett County/Lawrenceville has excellent parks/recreation areas.
The intown areas would be more liberal. Mixed political beliefs would be found in each of the areas you listed.

How about Lithonia? Anyone know about this little town?safe for a young couple with a small child? I have lived in West Philadelphia and Brooklyn, both in marginal neighborhoods, but as my situation changes (wife, child, etc.) I find that I am becoming more concerned with safety.
