Thank you Newsboy. My husband is looking at a job in Morrow and I was looking at Fayetteville for our family. We have 3 kids two in elementary. Being from California originally I want diversity for our family and good schools and activities. We currently live in SC and it's not as much diversity as I would like. I'm ready to get out of here. I am African American and grew up not judging people on their skin color. My Southern Baptist church is probably 90% white. Although I love it it would be great for my kids and myself to have diversity and see that there are Christians that look like them LOL. I am glad that your family has stayed put and embraced the diversity. I wish more people would.

I disagree. I don't think diversity is another way of saying anti-white. For me it's living in an area that has some of every culture who care for their neighborhood and want the best for their kids. I am African American but do I want to live somewhere where people don't take care of their homes, aren't worried about their children, or lack any motivation NOOOOOOOO. I want my kids to see strong people who work to take care of their families no matter what their race. I want good schools with teachers who don't have to spend time on parents who don't care which carries over to their children. I want a Bible teaching church no matter what color the pastor is. I don't see a problem with diversity.

What you want simply doesnt exist in most places. Blacks, Whites and other races simply dont co-exist in most areas. In most white areas once the area gets more than 25% minority the whites start to flee in droves and thus the diversity you seek becomes watered down as one group flees This happens not only here but pretty much everywhere else in the US that isnt in some downtown environment like New York City. One city after the next in this metro region has gone from majority white to majority minority over the last 20 years. WAY TOO MANY to even mention. If people where so open to diversity you wouldnt see these dreastic demographic shifts. I mean look at Fayetteville, 20 years ago it had to be over 95% white and even ten years ago was still very solidly majority white. Now its majority minority and the highschool is overwhelmingly black. You may want diversity and to live in a diverse area but most people do not or Fayetteville would still be majority white.

Wow! What a spirited discussion over a question everyone should ask before moving to an area. Diversity is not a code word for anti-white. Actually as a black person who just retired from the Air Force and have lived in five different states, the first thing I always looked for, was a diverse community to live in. For me it was a community primarily white, but with other races round off the rest. That was becasue the schools would normally be better, because the investments would normally be in those communities. From California, South Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Mexico (even Germany)... the neighbors on both sides of me and directly across the street have always been white and we got along just fine. Our kids played together, went to each others parties, had sleep overs and literally just grew up together. If they're left alone to make up their own minds, we would not be having this discussion. CRIME ... believe it or not, is just as big a concern for blacks as it is for whites. Funny thing I've found is that whites who are less likely to be affected by it, are quicker to talk about it as a problem. I've been researching fayetteville for over a year, with the intent of buying a house there in a few months, but it seems that Fayetteville is dealing with a lot a BS that I'm not interested in dealing with. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll pass and just pay an extra $100K for a house here in Ohio.

I was interested to learn recently that New York City is one of the most rigidly segregated cities around. Not just Manhattan, it's Brooklyn and Queens too. It's ironic, considering that New York City is the ideological origin of the policies that have desegregated the rest of the country. Actually, "ironic" isn't quite a strong enough word ... "outrageous" might be better.

Keep in mind that a lot of segregation is self-segregation. What would you do, enforce diversity quotas on each neighborhood or building?

They are less likely to be affected by it because they are proactive and leave areas that are becoming crime-prone. Best of luck in any moving decision you may make. I love my hometown but some things have changed.

Default Kinda Depressing...

Newsboy pointed out that the Pacific Northwest is one of the lesser "diversified" areas in the country. I live in the PNW, and I would argue with that. But I would say the population is more Latino than African American here. And yes, most of us still use the politically correct terms.

We'll probably be moving to Fayette County this year. I was looking at Fayetteville, and I'm still considering it. Heck, I couldn't care less what kind of "diversity" is there, as long as the schools are good and my kids are as safe as they'd be in another town if its size. If everyone there is green, that's fine with me. Segregation... Bah. I guess it's the Yankee in me, but I have never understood why black people, white people, Asian people, can't get along. It makes me nervous to move to the south, where these topics seem to come up on every board for the area.

Point blank: If we'll be relatively safe in our homes, and my kids will get a good education at school, I'll be happy to move to Fayetteville.

As a northern transplant to Georgia, I can tell you- get ready to deal with racial issues a LOT more. Its unavoidable.
