With the police force being priority number one, I would say second on the agenda was to get a grip on all this multi-family development. Obviously, as decades go by and Atlanta continues it's path to megalopolis, more intense housing may be a reality, but I think the community wants to have more "self-determination" over the quality and quantity that goes in.

Corrrect me if I'm wrong, Spacelord, but I've been told that the Perimeter area will not be included in 'the new Dunwoody'; is that true?

Perimeter Mall and Perimeter Place (where Target is located) will be included, however, anything west or south of that will not be. This is per the final map that was agreed upon prior to the vote and per The Crier (neighborhood newspaper).

Yes but Dekalb has filed suit based on the inclusion of Perimeter area. That could force another vote

That suit is not even going to make it to court... are you kidding me? It has been mocked as a political move by DeKalb to scare Dunwoody.

The suit is actually against the state of Georgia for passing the legislation that then, subsequently, allowed Dunwoody to vote for cityhood, not against Dunwoody itself (although it would take away some sales tax revenues). The theory that I read was that this was a move by Vernon to force Burrell Ellis to pick sides in the battle via his vote to pursue to litigation, thus either alienating him from Dunwoody OR the rest of the county (supposedly), since Burrell is a long time enemy and is now running for the CEO post. Or it could have also been to simply dissuade people from voting for the city by using scare tactics. Either way, I think I agree with MMANN that it won't see much action. The funniest part (and really telling of why everyone is so sick of Dekalb) is that county taxpayers' money is being used to pay for this.

I believe he actually voted for the lawsuit (I read his position on his website, but can't remember exactly the reasoning....something along the lines of 'he's in favor of self-determination, but it must be allowed in the right way' or something). It didn't really matter, though, b/c there are plenty of Ellis signs all over Dunwoody at this point.

Moving to Georgia from White Plains, NY
I am retired and looking to move to Georgia, I am thinking about Dunwoody, Roswell or north Atlanta. I would like to be no more than 30 minutes from the Grant Park area as I have relatives there. I would also like to live a diverse neighborhood.

Personally, I think the whole Perimeter area (on both the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody side, and including the medical center and all the apartments and condos) should incorporate into a city (it would span two counties, but there's no good way around that).
This would solve all sorts of problems. It would put all the multi-family housing that neither Sandy Springs nor Dunwoody wants outside their cities, it would give the new Perimeter city a healthy residential population, and Perimeter would be in control of themselves and free of the counties trying to take advantage of them and ignore their needs, which is the whole reason the Perimeter CID currently exists.
Not only that, in the long run, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody would be free of encroaching multi-family housing, since that sort of development would be limited to within Perimeter city limits, which would eventually become a Buckhead-esque urban area.
I think Dunwoody probably doesn't want to lose the taxes from the mall but on the other hand they won't have to worry about the apartments, and their residential population is large and high-income so their tax base should be fine.
For Sandy Springs it might be a bigger problem since they would lose a lot of major corporations and the medical center....
Still, I think Perimeter as its own entity would be best, especially in the long run. The problem is that Perimeter spans two counties and 60% of Perimeter is within Sandy Springs city limits, with most of the reminder about to be in Dunwoody city limits, so it's pretty much a mess of a situation.

If you choose off-peak traffic times then you can live in Dunwoody and/or Roswell/North Atlanta and be 30 minutes from Grant Park. Typically it might be more like an hour from north Atlanta to Grant Park.
You might wish to start your own thread about this.
