We are moving to the Emory/Decatur area in August and are considering getting utilities (electricity, natural gas, water, cable internet, local phone) for the house we are renting. Any recommendations? Warnings? Good or bad experience? We appreciate your help!

(sorry for the double-posting under "Georgia")

Electric and water you don't really get a choice. GA Power for electric and Dekalb County for water, unless you install a well. If you're renting, it's fairly common for landlords to pay for he water.

You have some choices with Gas. I've always used Scana, and have not had any problems. Shell, Atlanta Gas Light, and some others I can't think of at the moment also provide natural gas service.

Cable internet. I hear Comcast is the only game in town. I think they are horrible and I strongly suggest not giving them any money. Our house has never been wired for cable. We tried to get them to set it up, but they never showed up. When I called them to find out what was going on they said ALL their contractors left our work order on the pile and chose to do easier jobs for other people. I probably would not have heard anything from them if I hadn't called. They wasted about 12 hours of my time and I have nothing to show for it.

Phone: Bell South/ATT, or whatever cell phone provider you like.

Gas Providers:
Georgia Natural Gas Providers

High Speed Internet: The two heavy hitters here are AT&T and Comcast. I've had both--I prefer AT&T. Comcast frequently goes out during a bad rainstorm.

Phone: Pretty much your choice...AT&T is the major landline phone provider. There are other companies out there like Vonage, etc.

Hope this helps!
