Just moved and love it!!! Also have a question?
Hey I posted a message a few months ago regarding our (my husband and I) possible impending move to the Atlanta area, well we did it. We arrived 3 weeks ago. We live in Alpharetta and so far I LOVE IT!!! I know it's early, but it's not at all what I had imagined. We are fortunate to work relatively close and we get to avoid the major interstates in our daily commute, so that helps. I just can't get over how convenient everything is and how friendly the people are.
I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who take time to respond to these posts. I found this website extremely helpful.
I do have one question regarding trash pick up. We currently have a company (Waste Management) that picks up trash and very limited recycled goods. (no glass, cardboard) I have already been to the Roswell recycling center to dispose of those items, but I would like something a little more convenient if possible. Does anyone know of another trash pickup service that also collects most recycled goods? I am going to call the list under rubbish removal in the yellow pages, but if anyone has personal recommendation I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!!

According to the City of Alpharetta website, they DO pick up cardboard and glass for recycling. See below.
City of Alpharetta Website || Trash Pickup Service
Recycling
The City includes recycling services as part of the normal garbage collection service. Recycled material should be placed in the recycle bins provided by the City and placed at the curbside on the regular garbage pick-up day.
The following materials may be recycled:
Aluminum and tin cans
Glass
Newspaper
Catalogs
All #1 and #2 plastic containers
Magazines
White or colored paper
Chipboard boxes (cereal, soda, cracker, detergent boxes)
Corrugated cardboard (broken down to 2 x 2 size in order to fit into the recycling bin)
Food items should be rinsed from the containers. To request additional bins or for more information concerning the City’s recycling program, contact our Customer Service Team at 678-297-6060.

Thank you for your help. I called that number and guess what, we are officially in "John's Creek". I called the city of John's Creek and their waste management is privatized so they gave me 2 companies to contact, one of course was Waste Management, and the other Advanced Disposal, neither which pick up glass. Thanks for trying.

I'm not particularly familiar with your area, but if you have a Farmer's Market nearby there might be a recycling center there. We used to take our recycling to the Dekalb Farmer's Market before we got curbside recycling.
I hope you're able to find somewhere to recycle. Everyone should be doing it rather than junking up our planet with trash.

We also have Waste Management (in Woodstock) and I have not been able to find alternative companies that pick up all recyclables (especially glass). We keep those items separate and visit the Roswell recycling center once a month. It's not ideal, but we tie it in with other errands (e.g., it's super close to Harry's Farmers Market - which is basically a really awesome Whole Foods). Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Roswell center is open on Sundays.
I agree with JPD - we all need to do our part. I am appalled at how many of neighbors don't recycle AT ALL!
Oh yeah, welcome to Atlanta! I'm glad you're enjoying so far.

Congratulations on your move. My family and I are inthe final stages of making a decision but the public high school system and commute into Buckhead is scaring me. How far are you from DT ATL? What area of Alpharetta did you move too? Friends told me to look at Roswell(East)

GA_Bound,
We are buying in east roswell (coming from FL), and we move in at the end of the month. my husband has been working up there the past couple weeks, and loves it. I know that one of our new neighbors commutes to buckhead, and there's traffic. Just depends on when you leave.

Trash & Recycling
Welcome to Johns Creek. You may have found a trash/recycling company by now. One you might consider that advertises recycling of quite a few materials, including glass is Allied Waste Services. Their service has been good, but they have regularly increased their price by just a few dollars on every quarterly statement. That's how I found your question, looking for other companies. My concern also is the recycling. We only recycle paper and aluminum cans, but have entertained the idea of recycling more materials. I am awaiting quotes and services provided from both Allied Waste and Waste Management.

As a side note, do these towns and cities actually inspect what the recycling companies are doing to make sure they are doing it?
Channel 2 and 5 used to do stories every-other year where they would follow the trash guys after they picked up recycled items. They would put them in the special compartments on the trash trucks as specified, but when the news crews followed them, they wound up going to dumps and dumping the recycled items into the general trash along with everything else.
Of course, once confronted, the waste companies would act surprised, promise heads would roll, and that they would get back on it, but a couple years will pass, they'll redo the stories, and catch them all back doing the same thing. I think this was why Powder Springs (where I live) gave up door to door recycling pickup altogether... they simply were not actually recycling the stuff!
I'm sure there are companies that really do what they say, but are there any online check-up or inspection reports anyone is aware of that show if they are doing their jobs or not? Is there even a government department that checks up on them at all?

A few years ago I lived in a small corner of cobb county in a new townhome community. One morning I watched the garbage men dump my recycleables into the same area of the garbage truck and was appalled. I should have called the company but did not and regret it. I work hard to keep our earth safe by washing out every container and saving it now to take to the Cobb County Dump for recycling. It is very inconvienient (and bothersome to go alone as a woman) but I need to make a difference. I wish that other people in this southern city would! Let Atlanta know of an easier way to recycle. I found nothing on Google.
