Hi ATL-CDers,

As some of you know I am a bike commuter. I have a friend who lives over by the Shamrock Plaza/North Dekalb Mall area. In fact, right behind Shamrock Plaza. She works at the some general location as I do and wants to start bike commuting, too. For general purposes, the end of the commute is near the Target on N Druid Hills Rd.

Now, the direct route is a straight shot up N Druid Hills. But that road gets busy and traffic is speedy during rush hours.

So, the goal is to find a quiet route, even if it takes a bit longer.

Looking on Google Maps it seems that the railroad REALLY bisects the neighborhood so that there are NO streets that cross it for a couple of miles in either direction of the railroad. However, I've learned that neighborhoods of this age often have modified things so there are footpaths, etc, to connect them to other neighborhoods. These, obviously, don't show up on Google Maps.

So I am here to ask you guys if you know of any way to get from Shamrock to Target while avoiding N Druid Hills Rd. I'm open to all kinds of suggestions!

Thanks!

She could try Lawrenceville Hwy--not a great choice, jmo---Frazier Rd to LaVista which then intersects with NDH at Toco Hill and then contend with NDH for about a mile or so to the Target.

Another option is Lawrenceville Hwy to Frazier Rd and LaVista and then ? cut through the Oak Grove area--I can't recall the exact street--after you turn onto La Vista from Frazier Rd there is a street on the right hand side. This street actually goes straight through Sagamore Hills to Audubon and intersects at Clairmont.

LD would know.

I think Lawrenceville Hwy would be just as bad as N Druid Hills, but I'll explore the map with your ideas.

Thanks!

About the only other choice --which I think would be the absolute worst--would be to try Lawrenceville Hwy to Scott Blvd--and cut through the area around Shamrock High School--couldn't begin to name streets but it goes through Medlock Park. She would end up at Clairmont--across from the VA and what horrible traffic from that point on.

The other option if she tried the route through Oak Grove/Sagamore Hills is to exit Audubon onto Briarcliff until it intersects with NDH at the Target. Not great but somewhat better than Clairmont.

Yeah the thought of biking either of these routes gives me chills.
One issue is the railroad track that runs through the neighborhoods in 30033. It affords limited accessibility between the neighborhoods there. It's a little convoluted, but this route would pretty much keep you off the major thoroughfares:

Mt. Olive past Shamrock Middle to Delcourt, turn left
Delcourt to Country Squire Dr, turn right
Country Squire Dr to Country Squire Ln, turn right
Country Squire Ln to Pangborn Rd, turn left
Pangborn Rd to LaVista, jog to the left and then to the right on Pangborn Cir
Pangborn Cir to Fairoaks Rd, turn left
Cross Oak Grove Rd
Fairoaks Rd to Timberland Rd, turn right (and wave hello)
Timberland Rd to Alderbrook, turn right
Alderbrook past Sagamore Elem to Audubon, turn left
Audubon to Clairmont, turn left (you'll only be on Clairmont briefly)
Clairmont to Mt Brian, turn right
Mt Brian to Berkeley Ln, turn left
Berkeley Ln to Jan Hill Ln, turn right
Jan Hill Ln to Beacon Hill, turn right
Beacon Hill to Belle Isle, turn left
Belle Isle to Knob Hill, turn left
Knob Hill turns into Childerlee Ln in front of the Margaret Harris Center; continue to the sharp bend at the townhouse complex. There you will find a pedestrian opening in the fence. Target is on the other side.
Whew.
