BTW, I dressed exactly as I mentioned for my bike commute (7 miles) and I was toasty the whole time. My toes were a little chilled, but not frozen blocks. I think that's because I wore my running shoes and the thing with running shoes is they're 99% mesh, so they have ZERO ability to hold body heat...which is the point. They're SUPPOSED to let it all out so you don't get swamp foot. But I think for winter bike commuting I will need to wear my trail shoes, which have Gore-Tex liners to protect you from water and also insulate you. No need to wear an ultra light weight shoe in the winter...

These temperatures are definitely cold for early December. Currently in Atlanta the average high is still approximately 57 degrees. Usually something like this comes in Mid January and might last about a week. (Remember last year was VERY cold in January with many nights in the mid-teens...and also on February 12 (a.k.a Hell Rush Hour 2K10), we received roughly 3 inches of snow). It definitely gets cold here in Atlanta, but an outbreak this intense this early is somewhat unusual. Makes me curious what January might bring.

It is frigid out here! According to AccuWeather, the period this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's is going to be the coldest in the Southeast when compared to normal temperatures. The weather channel is forecasting a HIGH of 29 w/ flurries and wind and low of 14 for the 13th!

The thing I find about GA when it gets cold is that a lot of people don't dress for it. You can't go out with a thin jacket or sweatshirt when it's in the 20s or 30s. You have to dress for the weather, and given that it gets this cold every year, there is no excuse for not having a winter coat or jacket.
hey, what do you do with your ears and face freezing. I can't seem to find anything other than a ski mask, which is a bad thing to wear around in Downtown DC.

I spent much of the last major cold snaps of the past two years in South America. Gonna be ROUGH this year! I kinda liked the summer time temps in Jan/Feb in Chile.

Packing was hard, though. I had a suitcase full of summer clothes, and was going to the airport in a heavy jacket, which I handed over to my mother before going off into security checks. Coming back was worse! I had no winter jacket with me, and there was snow on the ground in Atlanta??? MIA is always freezing, and 5+ hour layovers there shivering in an empty airport at 5 am were not fun! Last year, I couldn't stand it any longer so bought a Brookstone travel Slanket-type thing to wrap up in, from one of the airport shops. The year before, they actually had to grab blankets from the plane to bring out to us, who had all come in from the southern hemisphere, freezing our azzes off.
