Question Help...Moving to Oakley Township in Union City

Hello Everyone,

I really need some advice. I have been looking for a home for a long time now. My fiance and I came into a relationship with a total of three kids (1,2 and 9yr old), so we have a ready made family. We know that we need a lot of space, 4 bedrooms at least, and a garage. I am a master cook (tooting my own horn) so the benefits of the kitchen are important to me. We currently live in a 1400 sq ft apt in the post brookhaven and have quikly outgrown the space.
We started looking at some Legacy communities, but when I found out that thier gutters were only in the front and they only built to GA standards, I was quikly turned off . I was told that DRHorton was a great builder and found a community in Union City with thier own elementry school and day care.
The house we fell in love with met all of our needs and then some. Plus, DRHorton is giving us a $25,000 bonus for choosing thier lender (Optium or Bank of America) which is actually great.
I think I just need a confirmation that this is the right thing to do. I am hoping that if anyone knows anything good or bad about this community. PLEASE LET ME KNOW SOON! We have to sign our contract soon and this is the largest purchase of our lives.

Where will you be working? What kind of commute? That matters tremendously, in my opinion.

I am very familiar with that area. I know a real estate agent that bought in Oakley Township with NO regrets. Their homes are very well built; he has been in his for 3 years and haven't had any complaints. Their homes contain VERY nice gourmet kitchens with track lighting, some with islands, custom-made cabintry and tile backsplashes; plenty of room to spread out and "throw down."
Union City taxes are not that expensive either; for county and city taxes, it's around 1600-1800 a year which is CHEAP considering it's Fulton County (it's south Fulton County though).

They just built a new elementary school called Oakley Township Elementary and the principal there is great. If you are there long enough when your oldest gets in middle school, The middle school (Bear Creek) got a new principal last year and even though I don't think they made AYP, he is doing some great things over there to turn that school around. The same with Creekside (the High School). Both of those principals taught at my high school when I was in high school and they were cool. By the time your child makes it to middle and high school, most changes with the schools will have taken place. The principal at the middle school came from a south Fulton High school that made AYP EVERY single year.

Oakley Township is also in a great location; you are close to Fayetteville, Newnan, and Douglasville for shopping; even more closer to Newnan because it's right near I-85.

So the gutter thing turned you away too, huh? I knew it was someone else out there who liked to focus more on quality than square footage. What's the use of square footage when your house is going to sink in the long run because the water run-off has no where to go? Anyhow, glad you are just as meticulous as I am.

Oakley Township is definitely a great subdivision; you can't go wrong with the quality of these homes and it's in a great location. Plus, I think there is a day care right near the new school. I'm glad that someone is considering the southside because we seem to get no love here on this forum. We are what everyone wants newcomers to stay away from, other than Fayette County.

Have you also looked at Lakeshore in Newnan? They are also DR Horton homes.

Well, I wasn't worried about the commute, because Oakley is only 10 minutes from the airport and convienent to Atlanta. My soon to be husband works for Bellsouth in Lindberg and has a motorcycle. So he is not concerned with traffic. Plus, all of our friends live in that are. We have no blood family here, so we are always in need of our friends for babysitting and help. They are more like family really.
My church is in College Park, so I wanted to be near there as well. My agent told me that she was concerned about the foreclosure rate, but from being a financial advisor, I know that it will work itself out over a 10 year time span. And we do not plan on buying a home that we will move out of in less than 10 years.
I feel as though you are my confirmation ATLienGirl. Thank you so much!

You are quite welcome, and I wouldn't worry about the foreclosure rate because that's EVERYWHERE; these loans that lenders qualified these people for just so they could get paid are blowing up in their faces; true enough, it is quite high in Fulton, but, Fulton is a large county.

You will like Oakley. Fulton Schools in that area are great. I lived in Union City for a year and didn't have any complaints about it; especially people I know that stay in Oakley. My agent sales there all the time. Good luck and happy moving!

Are there any other cities that are nice to relocate to? I am considering moving from Florida but am concerned about the job market and salaries in Georgia. My husband and I both make a nice salary working for a local municipality and hope to find something that's not to much of a cut in pay.

Hi Arkanfine,

It has been a few months since your post and wanted to know if you moved to Oakley Township? I currently live in Douglasville but work in the East Point area and Oakley Township would be 7 minutes from work rather that the 1 hour commute I currently have.

If you have moved do you like it? The house are very nice and the square footage is unbelievable for the price.

I would check out Henry County. Especially the area of McDonough. It is very quite. The only downside is traffice, but traffic is everywhere.

Wink Help me i need to relocate!!

Help!!!

My family and i would love nothing else in the world but to relocate to Union City, Georgia by July, 2008. Born and raised in New Jersey, my mother and grandmother was born and raised in Georgia. I have family and friends in Georgia. I've been made an offer on my home here in Jersey and hope to have the check in my hand in the next 2-3 weeks so i could fly down to find a home in Oakley Township. I have two children one that is an adult with a small child and a 16 year old. My 16 year ask constantly if i believe we will be living in Georgia by the summer because he wants to start his senior year of high school at Creekside High. My adult daughter wants to follow us there when we move. I've have sent hundreds of resumes in hope of obtaining employment before the move. I have been an employee of the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) in Newark, New Jersey for almost 25 years. Georgia calls their agency DFAC. I am a jack of all trades. I have also held part-time jobs in addition to my full time in the hospitals as a emergency room registrar, unit clerk at a newspaper company as a customer service representative also at Walmart.
I am a certified bartender. So i will work to make it. I can be reached days at (973) 648-7759 evenings at (973) 416-5271 or cellular (973) 704-5321.

Thanks Atlanta with much love!!!!!!!

I know everyone wants a brand new home these days but I just purchased a foreclosure in Oakley for 175000. It is a cambridge plan. It was bought new 3 years ago for 240000. Most are in move in condition and are only 1-3 years old. So when looking in oakley township I say look at the foreclosures first. Email me at sharonatw@gmail.com hope this helps!!!
