And in winter, especially further North, it does seem to be fairly reliable in predicting the likely intensity of cold fronts (for example when you see that the high temp is expected to plunge to 10F you know it's a pretty strong arctic front, though the actual high will likely be off by a few degrees), if not so great in terms of forecasting snow events, but even in Summer the 10-day can be pretty good at forecasting when the next high pressure system will set up, long periods of high temps, and cooling trends, etc.
I should amend what I said to "essentially useless for major upcoming events". If we're in a relatively stable weather pattern, then it is usually on point. With extreme weather though, especially in the Southeast, there are two many factors that have to fall in place for it occur to tell for sure that far out.

Well, if you really insist, here goes the stuff that Meteorologists look at to determine long term forecasts. Good luck deciphering it:

Here's a good forum where they try to make sense out of all of that

Based on a cursory search, I see little evidence that this is actually going to happen.

Nooo! I'm already worried about moving from LA and now this? It's been unusually cold here in the land of perfect weather, temperatures have been falling into the mid-40s at night and I try not to leave my house too much. -9 is absurd.

This could be a very dangerous and life threatening situation.
The proper term is "climate change" not "global warming". Two things about this comment:

1. Weather is not the same thing as climate. (So a cold snap does not disprove the theory of climate change).

2. Many climate scientists believe that unusually cold winter weather and increased snowfalls are expected effects of climate change.

If we keep on ignoring the threat of climate change, it'll be our descendants that pay for our short-sightedness, unfortunately.
