Over 20 years ago I joined the Military, and I always thought I would return to North Georgia. Much of our Retirement benefits are tied to the Military Installations. Without the political cover of Sam Nunn, BRAC definitely had an adverse impact on nearby bases. Anyone else disappointed by the Atlanta area Military Base Closures?

Fort Mcpherson - Gone
Fort Gillem - Gone
The Lake Allatoona Army Recreation Area - Gone
Naval Air Station Atlanta - Gone
Naval Supply Corps School Athens - Gone

Dobbins Air Force Base - Dobbins Air Reserve Base

My research has led us the logical choice of retiring to Huntsville, AL (Redstone Arsenal), but I still feel torn since North Georgia is home.

You may or may not know this but;
Dobbins ARB is expanding. The Naval Air Station was on the other side. They just built a new commissary that will service the area.
The VA is still one of the largest and best in the entire VA system
Robbins AFB and Ft.Benning are less than 1.5hrs away. They are HUGE.

That said yes I am disappointed but it just gives less choices but there is still enough options

afonega1,

It is has been a long time since Dobbins had a commissary, this is definitely a positive for the area. Unfortunately, Dobbins is a Reserve base now and lacking the facilities of an Active base. Now, if that scuttlebutt about AFRICOM relocating there became a reality, then options would improve. The next closest commissary is at Camp Frank D. Merrill, but it is very small. I believe Fort Gordon is also a 1.5 hour drive, which is inconvenient to say the least.

When you think of all the military bases what were and still are in Georgia, Georgia had to give up some. Sam Nunn wouldn't budge on any Georgia closures so after he left, it all hit at once. Atlanta can weather base closures better than other areas of Georgia. Those bases are vital to their economies.

If AFRICOM was relocated to Atlanta, that would be so awesome to the max.

I've heard talk that AFRICOM would be possibly be located at Fort McPherson and/or Fort Gillem.

As far as Ft McPherson is concerned, I thought it's course was already mapped out as a biotech center and a south Atlanta version of Atlantic Stationi.

I would put the blame on a reactionary voting populace that can't seem to currently keep a U.S. Senator in office long enough for this person to accumulate power & maintain a strong presence on the various committees dealing with the Armed Forces.

You must then think the concept of the citizen-representative is antiquated or something. Political office was never intended to be a career in this country. Your comment above implies that you feel differently.

There are a lot of unrighteous that go on this world that shouldn't be.

I wish that our country wouldn't be lead so easily & so falsely into war, and yet President Obama still has us mucking it up in Iraq. I wish that corporations & individuals with extreme wealth didn't have such a strong influence over our public policy, and yet the U.S. Supreme Court pretty much backed the money-changers in the Citizens United case.

I simply deal with the world as it is, not as I want it to be. You may not like it, but them's the breaks, take it or leave it.
