All it takes is one crippling ice storm that cuts power for a week or more, and all the naysayers who move here from other places and make fun of the way Atlantans "overreact" to winter weather will shut up for good.

A northern blizzard isn't as bad as a southern ice storm. Never. Ever. Period.

Default everybody must be at Kroger stocking up ...

Cuz their not on C-D!! Latest forecasts make this look like a monster, maybe the biggest since the Super Bowl ice storms of 2000.

I definitely have gotten my moneys worth.
No, these are Kahtoola micro spikes: Amazon.com: Kahtoola MICROspikes Pocket Traction System: Sports & Outdoors

I looked into *** Tracks and it seems they're okay for walking around. The spikes on them are a bit smaller and I read that on some versions they break. The Kahtoola ones seemed heavier duty.

I'll wear them over my GoreTex trail shoes and be set!

Ice on top of the snow is a lot easier to deal with (from a driving perspective, anyway) than ice with snow on top of it.

Of course, I suspect above-ground power lines are unhappy regardless.

Coming from MN, I do have to admit I was impressed with the little ice storm that hit back in 2004 (when we first moved down here). That was the result of 30 hours or so of freezing fog + rain, and wasn't all that bad, but I appreciated immediately that it was something I had never experienced in 40 years of Minnesota winters.

It was dangerous. And it was weird hearing the total silence at night (no cars on the roads) except for the occasional sound of a branch crashing down somewhere in the distance...

I have a healthy respect for ice storms. Especially when I'm in an area with a lot of hills and winding roads.

I will never try to argue we southerners are good with dealing with winter weather, have the infrastructure for it, or even use to it. But, it is nice to hear people from the Northeast and Northern Midwest acknowledge some of the obstacles we have to overcome when our Warm Gulf Coast storms hit a huge cold front. Even, my friends who have moved up north have trouble explaining it. Thanks.

But yes at the end of the day respect the hilly winding roads

This will not be 'the good stuff'. One projection showed NC getting a considerable amount of snow.

I sure hope you're right! The last forecast I saw was MAYBE 1-2" of snow changing to sleet and/or freezing rain with a 1/10" of freezing rain possible? There is another system with drier air to our north that will rob most of the moisture from us? I can't ever win!
