I am a single 28 year old guy. I currently live in New Jersey. I was offered a job transfer to Atlanta. If I make the move, I will get the same salary as I get in NJ ($63,000). I need some advice. What is Atlanta like? How is the cost of living. I would probably like to buy a condo. What could I get for a maximum of $150,000? I would be interested in either living in Alanta, in a nice area, or the suburbs outside the city limits. What are some areas that are nice?

What part of town will you be working? You can get a good deal on a condo right now for that price. $63,000 goes pretty far here compared to NJ. First let us know where you will be working so we can recommend the best areas for you.

For $150k you can afford a nice house in most decent to good areas.

The Druid Hills and Decatur areas are very nice... but a bit pricey.

Chamblee is like Noah's Ark. They have two of everything.

Marietta is a very nice place... so long as you focus on buying a house instead of a condo/apartment.

The truth is you need to tell us where you would be working at so we could give you a more specific recommendation. Atlanta is a H U G E place and unlike up North you can enjoy the benefits of a city without actually being near too much traffic.

Yes, 63,000 will take you very far here. You could get a nice loft for that.

Default Not too much traffic!?

Hopefully you are not coming here to get away from traffic, because it is everywhere here. I live in Marietta (West Cobb specifically) which is suburban, and sit I in traffic everywhere I go. Most people we know spend an hour+ each way commuting to and from work. It takes 20-30 minutes to drive 1 1/2 miles to the main road that will then connect us with I-75. Coming home will be just as bad. Access to expressways here is not at all convenient. We drive 15-20 minutes without traffic to get to the nearest on-ramp. Don't let anyone fool you that traffic is not horrendous here. I think this demonstrates the problem well; in metro Atlanta there are approx. 5.5 million people of which approx. 500K live in Atlanta proper, the rest are everywhere else, so you cannot get away from the congestion. Too many people with no mass transit and virtually no infrastructure to support this kind of population.

Good luck with your decision.

Don't live out in the burbs or just move close to your job if you don't want to commute. This is not unique to Atlanta as it does not have the worst traffic and it is not the cities fault people here like having big houses.

I live downtown and my access to every freeway is excellent.I can even take regular roads to the burbs without even getting on the interstate when its congested.I guess what I'm saying is:"DUHHH"!!You live way in the freakin suburbs(especially to the North),what do you expect?Thats NOT Atlanta anyway.
Marietta you can take Northside Dr,Atlanta Rd, and a few other roads into Atlanta,
