Need to get away! Was thinking of taking a road trip (Solo, with two kids under 4) somewhere not too far away. Wanted beach but I think it's too much driving. Does anyone have a suggestion of a great family-friendly place that offers kids' activities and is also fun for adults?
Mountains/Lakes/Beaches are all good for us! Thanks!!

We always take quick getaways to the Smoky Mountains area, including Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. In that area you have the hiking and scenic drives in the National Park, as well as all the touristy stuff in Gatlinburg like the Ripleys Believe it or not museum, Dollywood amusement park, miniature golf, go-karts, etc. It is certainly not an upscale resort area by any means, and many people consider the area quite tacky (which it is), but we always have fun there, and the kids love it. It's about 2.5 hours from Atlanta to Cherokee NC, then about 45 minutes through the national park to get to the Tennessee side where all the hotels are.

Chattanooga is a nice place for kids as well. Lookout Mountain, Rock City, the river...there are lots of things to do for the kids.

Ditto. Chattanooga. Although being one person with two young kids under watch I'd be hesitant to do the Rock City thing - more likely the Aquarium and waterfront area would be better and take up most of a day. It's only just over an hour and a half drive from here as well.

Good point AtlantaGreg . In my opinion, Rock City is not that bad it is mostly underground. Lookout Mtn does have alot of potentially dangerous spots.

yeah, I was thinking more lakefront as opposed to hiking with those backpack thingies on! I don't think I could manage that. Don't mind taking my kids to restaurants either. Anyone stay at resorts in the N. GA or NC mountains that they'd recommend?

What about Calloway Gardens. You can rent a bike with a little towable carrier and bike all over the place. There are pools, lakes, butterflies and lots of running around space. Eat dinner at the Whistling Pig and the kiddies will enjoy the barbeque!

Cosign Chattanooga. Even now (in early 20s), I've gone to Chattagnooga for weekend getaways as well as my mother. The Aquarium and Lookout Mountain can never get old to me. There's also plenty of restaurants, bars and other entertainment options.

With this weather (rain and the approach of coldness) don't know how fun outdoor activities and water are going to be, so I'd suggest a livelier area with ready-made entertainment.
