Default Hotels

Hi folks, I will be driving through Macon/Atlanta area on I75 first week of August, is it wise to book hotel/motel in advance of arriving or look around when I get there?
Just wondering if around this time of the year is risky to take chance without reservation, also which hotels are best, safe and have cheap rates. i prefer Atlanta but seems pricey.
Also when I get there i'll be hungry for some good Georgia BBQ ribs, any suggestions?
I will appreciate any help.

Will you be stopping in Atlanta or Macon? This makes a difference. I would ALWAYS book my hotel in advance. This way you can check opinions websites such as tripadvisor to make sure its an OK hotel.

Other than holiday weekends, I've never made reservations, and never had any problem finding a room on first or second try. Smart thing to do would be get some phone numbers off the web, and call once you get south of Atlanta. The motels are likely to be newer and cleaner than ones close to Atlanta, in my experience.
