Crime in Edgewood, Kirkwood, EAV
I am currently searching for houses in the Edgewood, Kirkwood, and EAV areas. I'm seeing alot of foreclosures that I could afford. Some of them need tons of work while others are very much livable and wouldn't require too much work. Others, as I'd expect, are just deplorable.
I was curious if any members currently live in any of these areas. Which streets should I avoid? How common are burglaries? I think as a precautionary measure I plan on having bars on the windows in additon to a security alarm just to be extra safe. In any case, I wanted to get the boards feedback for these areas, especially if you live in or near these specific neighborhoods.

The crime in Atlanta has really risen this year. I advise everyone to go to a neighborhood association meeting before buying an area. This way you hear from the locals about whats going on. There are NPU Safety meetings also. People pry bars open, you can get film to put on windows to make then very difficult to break. If you get glass breaking sensors to trigger your alarm that will help. I would recommend a security door, kicking in doors seems to be the method of choice for those robbing houses. I would also get a dog.

edgewood, kirkwood, eav...
Generally speaking the safest of the three neighborhoods is Kirkwood, followed by East Atlanta and Edgewood bringing up the rear. Frankly, I think I'd avoid Edgewood unless you have a very big, angry dog - there are some very scary parts of Edgewood coming off of Rocky Ford.

Rocky Ford doesn't go through Edgewood. Do you mean Whiteford? I would agree with cmtiger in her/his ranking of neighborhoods by safety. Living in Kirkwood, my feeling is that most of the crimes are burglaries of construction sites, unoccupied homes, and garden sheds. I don't think there are any streets to avoid necessarily. I would say the northeast quadrant (north of Hosea Williams and east of Warren) probably experiences less crime, but that is a VERY rough approximation. Plenty of nice streets outside of this area. There are some well-known drug houses that it would be best to stay away from and a few bad apartment complexes. When you visit properties evaluate the street just like you would the house. I do not think you need burglar bars, and I am sure your neighbors would rather you not install them (quite an eyesore!). An alarm is always a good idea, as is a dog. And just get to know your neighbors. I know there are a couple of guys are our street that have lived there forever and keep an eye on our house (in a good way, that sentence could be read wrong). There is a safety thread on the Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization webpage ( Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization (KNO) :: Kirkwood Neighborhood, Atlanta, GA, you can request a password when you go to the page). You can get a good sense of crime in the neighborhood from that, plus KNO posts the monthly beat reports from our police zone there (note that it covers an area far larger than Kirkwood).

Its really not that bad, I live between moreland and whitefoord on Battlefield, right near the Churchs chicken. It has changed a lot in the last month, there was actually a segment on the news that featured a crack house that is being evicted. I have lived there for about 1.5 years and it is really improving. Not the best for a family with school age children but getting better steadily.

edgewood
I'm thinking of that area off of Whiteford where all those grey apartments and those beige duplex houses are. If you go east from the Target on Moreland on La France and then work over to Whiteford, you run into this really scary part of Edgewood. That was the area that I was thinking of. Do y'all know what I am talking about? It's about a block north of Hosea and about a block or two east of Whiteford.
I ended up there accidentally once when I was working my way home from Target, and it was a little intimidating to say the least. Anyone know what the deal is with that area?

HELP finding window security bars in Atlanta
I've just moved into the Old Fourth Ward and my house has been broken into. I'm looking for interior window security bars and can't find a supplier.
