Hello,

I will be moving down to the area in about a month and am looking at renting a house with a fenced backyard in the Alpharetta/Roswell/Milton but will be commuting to Canton/Woodstock. My budget is around $1,000/month. What will this drive be like in terms of mileage and time with traffic?

Also, any other places you may recommend? We would like to have comparable drive into the city, as well as to the Canton/Woodstock area for work.

Any other advice you may be willing to offer would be greatly appreciated!!!

For the most part you would be going against traffic, so that shouldn't be a concern. I can't really tell you what the mileage would be (not much at all), but Alpharetta (east) and Roswell (south) are next to Milton, which is next to Canton to the north and Woodstock to the west. It all depends on your start and finish point.

The Canton/Woodstock area seems like a popular place to live, with excellent schools and housing stock that's probably a bit closer to your budget. If you're working in the area, why set yourself up for a commute from someplace else?

I honestly don't know what you're going to find to fit your budget in North Fulton. I would suggest concentrating your rental search near where you'll be working. The $1000 per month budget only equates to a home value of around $150K.

Best of luck with your move!

The main concern is that my fiance will most likely be working in downtown Atlanta, so we are trying to find a location to split the distance for us so she doesn't get stuck with the long commute each day to work. With that being said, any additional suggestions in terms of location for us?

If you're trying to "split the difference" between downtown Atlanta and Canton/Woodstock, wouldn't it be better to look for housing somewhere along the route between the two? That would suggest to me somewhere along the I-75/575 corridor. Kennesaw? Smyrna? I'm not too familiar with this area - hopefully others will chime in. However, I'm pretty sure that picking Alpharetta/Roswell/Milton as a commuting compromise between downtown Atlanta and Canton/Woodstock wouldn't be the choice of anyone knowledgeable about the metro area.

If you stay west of GA 400, it'll be a workable commute to the Canton/Woodstock area. If you go east of 400, you'll have a nasty surface road commute just getting across it.

That makes sense. It looks like staying west of 400 is our best bet. We are 27 years old and don't want to be too far removed from nightlife options, and would like to have a nice area local to us that include restaurants, shopping, and bars possibly. Does that help to narrow down our choices at all? Is Acworth a viable option?

Thanks for all the help on this!

I manage a good number of single family homes in the area and I don't think you will find a house for $1K or under in Alpharetta, Roswell, or Milton. (Especially one that is fenced, and in good shape and not total crap) You might be able to find an apartment in that price range. I might try and find a home in Woodstock or Acworth to rent, but again, the 3 bedrooms start usually around $1150 w a garage and that are clean. Towne Lake has some nightlife as does Woodstock, and is near 575 so your wife can head downtown. Not a ton of nightlife, but some and not all over 40 patrons.
