No hard feelings.

Moving along now. What was the OP about?
That we're frugal. I know plenty of frugal people, and I know plenty of people who blow a LOT of money on trinkets and gadgetry. I think I'm pretty frugal in most ways, but I spend more than I should on some things (mainly on dining out too often...which I use Groupon, Scoutmob, 2-for-1 nights and old-fashioned coupons for whenever possible).

It doesn't matter what the data shows. The reality is that many people, especially those from other parts of the country, are firmly convinced that Southerners are significantly fatter. It is widely believed that Southerners eat fattier foods and exercise less than their trim, healthy eating counterparts in New England, the Midwest and other areas of the country. You're not going to change that by simply citing a bunch of statistics and so-called facts.

Whatever. I saw plenty of fatties wandering the outlet malls up in Wells, ME on my last trip to New England.

Also saw plenty of "chunky" folks gorging themselves on huge baskets of fried clams dripping in grease all over the area. First time I had actually seen roadside stands offering this delicacy.

From the thread responses, it would appear that I am not the only one that doesn't buy this line of insistence that Atlanta/the South is yet again inferior to New England in just about everything, including obesity.

With all due respect, johnatl, I believe you are trying to make water run uphill. We have to own the fact that the South is viewed as a backwater. Regardless of what the "facts" or "hard data" may show, people are going to perceive things through their own filters. You could cite obesity studies all day long showing that Georgia is on a par with other states, but a lot of people simply aren't buying it.

In my opinion this is the South's burden for many years of provincial thinking, yahooism, and general rock-headededness. I'm not saying other parts of the country don't have their imperfections, but when folks really want to get down on a region where do their thoughts naturally turn?

To us, of course! The fact that it is widely viewed as socially acceptable to continually do so infuriates me to no end. And I'm not a native, I live here by choice.

Agree with this for the most part. From the obesity thing to other matters. Particularly the idea of race relations and segregation. If you ask Joe Schmo on the street what they're view of the South is in this regard (outside of the South of course) they'll tell you that we are the worst and most segregated part of the country. In reality, the most integrated cities are in the South and the least are in the Midwest and Northeast.

Now the source of all of this? It's one part our fault, one part extra-regional snobbery.

It used to be our saving grace here in Georgia that we had positioned ourselves as the center of the modern, progressive South. That meant we could at least look down our noses at truly hopeless cases like Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina.

However, we may have lost that edge in the past decade.
