UGA hasn't reached Chapel Hill's lofty reputation yet but it's definitely a rising star and is way ahead of the pack.

University of Georgia: Points of Pride

Good info. UGA is on track to become the next UNC, UVA, Vanderbilt, etc. of the South. Not there yet but well on its way.

UNC has had enormous budget cuts. My niece is a second-semester sophomore at Chapel Hill. She is a public policy major who hasn't gotten to enroll in a single class she has wanted since she started as a freshman-- they've cut too many classes and reduced class sizes. Right now, she's studying abroad in England because she didn't want to spend another semester taking classes she doesn't need. She's hoping when she comes back as a junior, she'll finally be high enough in the lottery to register for decent classes.

UNC may not be any better off than UGA in this recession.

I was about to make a similar point. Ga schools argue against cuts and subsequent loss of quality as if GA will be left behind the rest of the country. No, all the other schools' endowments and funding took similar hits.

The rivary between UGA vs GT reminds me a lot of USC vs UCLA although it isn't an apples to apples comparison as USC is private. Back when i was applying for college USC was a joke. Even if you had a 2.9 GPA with an SAT around a 1000 you would be admitted if you come from a family of money. USC was a 3rd tier school, however there always was a strong rivarly between UCLA and USC. Back in the 90s, UCLA would label USC students as the "Rich Airheads" or the "University of spoiled children"

Today USC admission is more competitive than UCLA and has now beaten out UCLA for rank #23 spot. USC has gone from a 3rd tier school to become the elite top #25 national school.

My purpose of this thread is not to compare UNC 2011 to UGA 2011, but a comparison of UGA 10 to 20 years from now. UGA is on my radar screen as an emerging world class institution. I just hope to see more top caliber Asians across the country get excited about attending UGA and see the UGA graduate school rankings in Law, Business, and Engineering start to rise to the top.

If executed correctly UGA has all the potential to become the new Ivy State University of the south like UNC Chapel Hill is today.

In my humble opinion.... GT need to be more like UGA (offering more diverse curriculum), and UGA needs to become more like GT (strong business & engineering program), however it is easier for UGA to change to become more like GT, but harder the other way around.....

Which is the reason ... I see UGA as the future rising star.

It used to be that a Georgia high school gradate with a reasonably good record had a good chance of admission to UGA. That is no longer the case. Many students who might have gone to UGA in years past are now attending one of our other state universities.

This year's enteriing class had an average 3.83 GPA in high shcool, 1263 average SAT and more than 240 graduated first or second in their class.

For the Honors Program, which I would highly recommend, the stats are

Average First-Year High School GPA 4.06
Average First-Year SAT 1471
Middle-Range SAT 1440 – 1490

Welcome to the University of Georgia Honors Program

There's no doubt UGA has been moving in that direction. In addition to some of the areas mentioned earlier like law, landscape architecture, journalism and business, they also have well known programs in pharmacy, veterinary medicine and other bio sciences, and they recently partnered with the Medical College of Georgia to offer an MD.

It will be interesting to see what things are like in another 10 years.

And wouldn't it be nice to restore train service between Athens and Atlanta?

This is the biggest difference in my opinion and there is good reason for it. UGA is a good school, but not even near UNC yet.
Actually, UGA is well known for it's accounting program. Routinely top 10 nationally per the Public Accounting Report for both undergrad and masters.

I like UGA better mostly because I prefer the town of Athens over Chapel Hill. Athens has a lot more going on and just looks like a more appealing college town to me.

I wish the law school was top 20. I'd be worth a lot more money. We actually just dropped from 28 to 35 in this year's rankings. It's still only $14k a year and definitely top tier, so it doesn't really matter. We are still better than UNC Law and our graduates make just as much as Emory's.
