Does Tech still label students this way?
No. They later added another letter after the gt and now I believe they use your first initial, last name, and a number. And you can create your own alias. Each student is also given a GTID.

When I was there, there was the option of the first initial and the last initial plus a number for an additional e-mail address (ex. vb13@gatech.edu). However, a student had to take the initiative to activate it.

And--I remember when they started adding another letter after the gt.

The Law school is also revered across the country. The School of Agriculture, a very large part of UGA academics, is perennially ranked higher than UNC. So, we have a national reputation. Also, if you look at other areas, like best education for your money, UGA's $16,000 tuition and fees fares better than UNC's $26,000. UGA is larger 35,000:29,000. Athens is ranked #1 college town in America, also winning the "Best Party School" award three years in a row from 2007-2010. It is older than UNC. The campus of UGA is larger and from personal opinion looks better. The UGA Food Services and Housing Services are both ranked #1 in the nation. And aside from basketball, which UGA is improving (made it to the NCAA tournament last year), UGA Athletics are far superior to a puny Tarheel program. Georgia is improving at a rapid pace, so don't be surprised if they rank in the top 25 colleges nationwide in a decade. Go Dawgs!
Tons of biased misinformation:

UNC is not an agricultural school...see NC State, UNC's and UGAs in-state (UNC is better value) and out-of-state tuition are almost equal:
Tuition and fees
https://www.admissions.uga.edu/artic...attending.html

UNC does quite well with the social scene, plus exist in the RDU metro that offers many other options, but I'll give you the party school...for the state of North Carolina...please refer to East Carolina for that one.

Puny? In terms of athletic programs, I'll give you UGA football, but UNC has a great athletic department....basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, etc. Check capital one cup from last year:

Capital One Cup (http://www.capitalonecup.com/standings.html - broken link)

UNC men 11th and UNC women 9th.

Basketball??? U can't be serious!

Which campus is older? still under debate isn't it? In terms of overall academics (a cut above) and depends on major, campus, metro, location, etc..my vote is for Chapel Hill, but I'm slightly biased.

Bump.

What changes will we need to see in UGA in the next 10 - 20 years so that it will be in the same class as UNC?

I think the admission acceptance for UGA will need to drop to 35% from today's 59%. UGA ranking dropped a little in the 2012 US News College ranking. I think GT ranked in #36 beating our UC San Diego and UGA dropped to #62.

Does UGA have all the majors and graduate programs that UNC has? Does UGA have the potential to become the next UNC in the future?

Why would UGA want to be the "next UNC"? I think it is doing fine on it's own. UGA fits neatly in the "above average large public liberal arts state school" bucket along with a dozen or so other schools in the country. Having worked in head-hunting for accounting/finance/business, I don't know anyone who would care if an candidate was from either UGA or UNC. GT is obviously a different animal, as it is focused on engineering/math and, by definition, would skew high in terms of academic reputation and graduate pay scale. I would argue that in most cases, someone looking at UGA/UNC/etc. would not be that interested in GT and vice versa. Realistically, once you get out of the top 20 schools, name recognition does not carry a lot of weight (until you get out of, say, the top 100), and even then it's usually discipline/major specific.

Well UNC is nationally known as a top-tier public university, along with UMich, UVA, and Berkeley. UGA does fine for itself, but it's not in that "elite" tier of public universities.

Does UGA have the right infrastructure and foundation in place to have the potential to become the elite UNC? I just know that Athens is a much nicer college campus than Chapel Hill. In what terms of academics/majors can UGA improve upon to become the "elite" tier public university like UNC?

Mr. Panda, we keep bumping into one another. I am currently an undergraduate student, majoring in finance and banking at Terry. Our risk management course is ranked #2 in the nation. I believe only Wharton is rated higher.

Rankings | Terry College of Business | University of Georgia

I would like to see an enlargement of the science departments at UGA. If we can somehow divide up the Franklin College of Arts and Science, I think UGA would rise up in the rankings.

Don't forget accounting, perenielly top 10. Also used to be tops in first-time passing the CPA exam (when they let you take it all at once). I think isn't real estate also rated highly?
