(Woman cited in Mableton for not having her cat, killed by a dog in her driveway, on a leash).
Whoever wrote this law must be nuts!...do they have a leash-law for canaries, snakes, goldfish ????? |

That's stupid, cat's generally mind their own business outside and almost never cause trouble except when they fight other cats...which does not result in death. Was the dog a stray or was there an owner? Did the owner get cited, too?
Pet birds, fish and snakes/retiles do not go outside, so that comparison doesn't make sense. |

I know someone who works for a car detailing company and he told me once that they get a LOT of cars coming in with "cat claw scratches" that need to be touched up and repainted. Cats like to climb up on cars and lounge, but many times they leave their claw marks on the paint. This can cost $$$ to fix, and honestly, it really isn't fair to those living in an area where neighbors let their cats run loose. At one time I had a neighbor who had 3 cats she allowed to stay outdoors, and I would see them on top of my own car all the time. The hood and roof of it over time were covered with claw marks. I didn't complain because it was a beat-up "work car", but the neighbor on the other side had to pay $ to have his repainted because of her cats, and then had to start putting a car cover on top of his car every time he parked in front of his house - and the cats scratched up the car cover, too. Likewise her cats would come into my fenced back yard and poop - my dogs would track through it and I had to treat them more than once for tapeworm, which the vet told me they most likely contracted from larva in the cat poop. $$ for vet bills, and it was in my yard with my contained dogs. This happens a lot with people all over. Likewise, cats do tend to poop and leave "gifts" (dead things) in people's yards and on their porches, etc. People don't appreciate other people's dogs pooping in their yards, and I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate a dog scratching up their cars, so I see no reason why cats are any different when it comes to that. So personally I support the law. Pets are pets whether they be cats or dogs. If you don't like on a multi-acre farm and you have neighbors, you need to respect them and not allow any pet to roam onto other people's property. The woman with the visting dog that killed the cat WAS ticketed as well as the cat owner. Actually, they were both in the wrong. She for not propertly restraining the dog, and the cat owner for allowing her cat to be outdoors uncontained and unleashed. |

OK, well that's true. I was thinking just in terms of causing injury to people or other animals (aside from the occaisional cat fight injuries).
I'm still opposed to a leash law for cats, though. |

LOL! I hope that's not a law in Gwinnett County, if so, I'd love for someone to come out and try to teach my cat to go about with a leash, heck, I'd be glad if they got a collar on him! Still lol.

same exact thing happened to my family a few years ago. We had 2 outside cats and our neighborhoods dog across the street killed both of them in the same night. When the bodies were discovered in their yard the next morning we raised hell with the dogs' owners who in turned called the police, who in turn ticketed us for no leashes.
I'm almost positive that the dog forced our cats into his yard, or merely killed them in ours and carried them over (we see the dog in our yard all the time, with no leash of course) This was also in Cobb County. |

Leash law? That would be nice, but I would just be happy if I could keep neighbors' cats out of our yard and stick to their own yard. We are bird watchers and have a good variety of birds as well as squirrels that frequent our yard, and it is really annoying when neighbors' cats come in our yard to kill these animals.

I totally support the leash law...regardless if a cat or dog. Why should your cat be able to roam on my property "doing his business" in my front or back yard and my dogs are held to a higher standard? My grandchildren have sandboxes in their fenced in back yards that cats have come over the fence and used it as a litter box. I love animals...be responsible pet owners and have them spayed, neutered and keep them on your own property! I hate to see an animal that has been hit by a car, that happens because of owners that don't take care of their animals. The poor thing is punished due to an owners stupidity.By the way...I have 7 dogs, they do not leave my backyard...ever! I have had my neighbor's cats climb my fence into my yard. My dogs are only out to do their business...so the cats have been able to get out when need be. I would feel terrible if one of my dogs hurt another animal...so please take care of your precious pets! Responsibility lies with the owner! Be accountable. Just my 2 cents!

By the way...whoever heard of a snake, goldfish or canary getting a rabies shot, spayed or neutered....better yet, taken for a walk? Just need to know!
