If you feel the undeniable desire to do so, either keep it to your self or create your own thread. Let's keep this one civil.

With that said, here we go!

Total Metropolitan Atlanta Population as April 1st, 2010

5,618,431

Numerical change since April 1st, 2000: +1,070,087
Percentage change since April 1st, 2000: +23.527%

Population By Race/Ethnicity numerically and by percentage

White - 2,895,372 - 51.53%
Black - 1,740,955 - 30.98%
Latino - 602,485 - 10.72%
Asian - 257,305 - 4.57%
Multi-racial (aka Two or more races) - 94,543 - 1.68%
"Other" - 14,161 -0.25%
Native American - 11,431 - 0.20%
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander - 2179 - 0.03%

Note: Barring some sort of unforseen reversal of overall demographic trends in the United States, this will be last Census in which Metro Atlanta will have a single majority (more than 49.99% of the population) "race" or ethnicity.

28-county MSA defined by OMB: 5,268,860
10-county ARC area: 4,107,750
5 core counties: 3,365,297
The numbers in the OP is for the entire CSA as defined by the Census Bureau.

If you are curious about the MSA, here is the break down.

White - 2,671,757
Black - 1,679,979
Latino - 547,400
Asian - 252,510
Multi-racial - 90,673
Native American 10,734
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander -2,075
"Other" - 13,732

Total Population: 5,268,860

By percentage

White - 50.7%
Black - 31.88%
Latino - 10.38%
Asian - 4.79%
Multi-racial - 1.72%
"Other" - 0.26%
Native American - 0.20%
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander - 0.03%

So as you can see, not much of a difference in population or demographics. The MSA area contains 93.77% of the CSA population while the additional counties in the CSA defined area adds only an additional 355,646 people or 6.33%.

I presented the numbers as a whole so that people can see the region as a whole, especially since the Atlanta CSA, MSA and core counties are all centered on Atlanta itself and doesn't add the population of another major city as it moves to the CSA level like Dallas-Ft Worth, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, or Washington-Baltimore.

Nice try with the whole "exposing Atlanta boosterism" meme though.

Dude, I learned a long time ago that the ARC is only good for bits and pieces of information. Like their demographic maps of the core counties: Awesome. What they consider Metro Atlanta: Not so awesome and kind of confusing.

Their charter says that they cover the core 10 Atlanta counties, but then on their 2010 Census info page they show 20 counties for some inexplicable reason since the Census Bureau defines Metro Atlanta as a 28 county area.

Any way, I'd just stick to what the Census Bureau defines as the area.

If anyone is interested in getting the info, you can go to Factfinder2.census.gov. If, like myself, you are completely confused by using that site at first glance, then refer to my hand instructions on how to use FactFinder2 here:

For the table created by the Census Bureau for the CSA without going to FactFinder2, use this link:

Love the fact that blacks are spreading into other areas of the metro. Look at Cobb and Gwinnett... whod have thought that would ever happen. I bet one poster is mad about that.

I understood where you were comin' from. Just havin' a little fun...

Great population statistics/tabulations. Great maps. Great explanation to back2dc about our CSA--the true measure of a metropolitan area, and the true measure of Atlanta.

Should we make a thread about what the MSA/CSA could/should encompass in 2010?

Gainesville has such continuous development between it and the core counties that it's going to be hard to consider it merely CSA or "not really Atlanta" to me anymore. These days, Hall and Jackson counties are all totally merged with Gwinnett and are somewhat dense suburbs, especially in the parts nearer Atlanta. I see no reason why Hall and Jackson shouldn't be part of the MSA.

Then you look at a county like Heard, which is part of the 2000 MSA, and it seems like there still isn't a bit of continuous urbanization to lump it together with Atlanta, even in the 2010 satellite imagery.

I understand the frustration.

To explain really brief and really simplistic.

The ARC only has 10 member counties, which is where they receive their funding and do more in depth research and regional planning.

However, in the 90s Atlanta's air quality got so bad we got with a series of EPA mandates and regulations. These required data collection and some limited planning in parts of 20 different counties. That is where the 20 come from.

Now if you read some of their reports they actually trace several different lines that show specifically where several different EPA mandated regions exist...

Btw... just a quick side note....

We have grown alot since then and since we have had those mandates and more attention from the ARC I would just like to highlight the average Atlantan is driving fewer miles to get to work and air quality is much better than it was in the late 90s. It appears to have worked.

Yeah Hall county should be apart of Atlanta’s MSA, even the ARC include it while excluding other counties by the census. But we got to wait to see how the census redraw are MSA. But on another note I seriously expect that Rome & Athens MSAs, plus Jackson county to be part of Atlanta’s CSA, a least by 2020. I hope the counties vote to build the infrastructure for this instead of waiting and be like OMG later.
