Today on CNN. com there is a link that allows you to put in your zip code and find out how close a nuclear plant is:

How close is your home to a nuclear plant?

That would be Georgia Power's Scherer Plant near Juliette. It has two 1000 foot tall chimneys and four cooling towers. Check it out from Google Earth or Google Maps ( 33d03'39.9"N 83d48'44.6"W ); notice the loop of railroad tracks that keep a constant supply of coal going into the large oval in the center of the loop.

There's also a coal plant just south of Eatonton with a 1000 foot chimney, but no cooling towers.

Plant Scherer is south of Atlanta near Forsythe. It has 4 large hyperbolic cooling towers. It is a coal plant with 4 850 MW units. Operated by Georgia Power.

It's coal fired but for some reason they use those nuke-looking cooling towers.
Yes, they look very much the same.

Correct answer...

The reason for the cooling towers is the water extracted from the river must be returned to the river very close to the same temperature so it doesn't disturb the environment.

I think this was the plant the OP was talking about. I see this one all the time on flights home from Florida & points south if the plane loops around to get in line landing from the east.

You also get a pretty clear view of Plant Scherer when driving up 475 northbound right before it merges back into I-75 north of Macon.
