Braves pitching coach accused of hurling gay slurs *| ajc.com

This is a dreadful story of Braves pitching coach, Roger McDowell, making some horribly inappropriate comments about gays in San Francisco. How do you think the Braves organization should handle this situation?

They should do nothing. This is baseball we're talking about, not Sunday school. I know it doesn't make the comments right, but I wonder what the hecklers said that upset him so much?

He should be instructed to (a) apologize and (b) adjust the attitude that caused him to make these remarks in the first place. Otherwise, your organization is basically condoning that kind of behavior. Not good for anybody, but especially for a company that makes its money based on public opinion.

It's not JUST the fact he made slurs - when a guy with kids told him to watch the language (in the slurs) as there were young kids around, he approached the guy with a bat in a threatening manner, tossing a few more choice words out, then telling him that the ball park was no place to bring kids, anyway.

It is a sports game for sure, but adding up the entire thing that happened, the coach is showing unprofessional behavior that shouldn't be allowed when you represent a team.

Hmmm, sounds like calling fans anti-gay slurs was the least offensive thing he did. Why are they even focusing on them? This guy apparently is known as a practical joker but this seems a little overboard for a joke. The Braves swept the Giants. Why did he have to pull that kind of attitude?

"McDowell is accused of yelling "Are you a homo couple or a threesome?" to fans sitting in the left-field bleachers. He's also accused of simulating a sex act with a bat.
Giants fan Justin Quinn, attending the game with his wife and 9-year-old twin daughters, said he asked McDowell to watch his language in the presence of children.
According to Allred, the former New York Mets pitcher told Quinn, "Kids don't [expletive] belong at the baseball park."
McDowell, 50, then "picked up his bat and started walking in a threatening manner towards Quinn," Allred said.
Quinn, 33, said McDowell asked him, "How much are your teeth worth?" The Fresno, Calif., resident said he managed to diffuse further hostilities but was encouraged by other fans who had witnessed the scene to file a report."

Kids don't belong at a baseball park? Apparently Jack McDowell doesn't belong in public.

If one of us regular folk pulled a stunt like this at work, we would be fired immediately. I'm not sure why the same doesn't hold for this clown.

People have altercations and get cursed out everyday and people go on with there lives, but the second a gay slur is mentioned it has to make the news. Folks need to grow up and stop being so sensitive, the only thing this story should be about is the coach going to far with the bat threat even though im sure its wasnt even that serious and him being extra rude around the guys kids since he is a coach and should be professional.

I believe a good point is that the father of the kids wanted his kids to know that it's not ok to use those gay slurs towards people in the first place, and when he addressed it toward McDowell, then it also became a threatening situation toward him as well. It doesn't matter if it was just the gay slurs, or just the threat toward the father, or both - neither/nor is right and either/or is something a coach that represents a team should be doing towards fans.

This is ridiculous. The guy should have been fired straightaway assuming this actually happened as reported.
