Aren't both about the same size, metro-area wise? Furthermore, isn't Houston's city limits much larger in area? It's the equivalent of places all the way up to parts of Marietta being considered "Atlanta". Thus, Houston's higher population isn't all that to brag about.

In terms of land area, Atlanta is the fourth largest metro area in the entire world (behind only New York, Tokyo, and Chicago) and bigger in size than Houston and even LA.

In terms of population, Houston and Atlanta are about the same, with Houston a little bigger.

I've never lived or even visited Houston, but having come from hurricanes in Florida, today I would say ATLANTA!

On the total scale of U.S. cities, I think they are more alike than different. (In other words, Atlanta and Houston are more akin than say Atlanta and San Francisco or Atlanta and New York or Atlanta and D.C.)

Not true. The stat you're referring to uses "urban area" not metro area. These are two completely seperate things. I know for a fact that Houstons metro is larger.
The link you posted is for America's richest counties by the way.

Only if you take I-45.
However, in other directions, Houston isn't as spread out.

raised in houston . . .been in Atlanta 15 years. i would take ATL any day. I go to houston at least twice a year. it is where atlanta was in the early 90s. As much as houston is more multi-cultural than atlanta, it lacks the city vibe that AtL has, which i love.
never moving back to H-town

I would say Houston. Give Houston some shine. I can't wait until Atlanta's shine turns dull so that another city can get it. Like I said a while back, people need to see other cities' opportunities and abilities instead of quickly jumping to move to Atlanta. FOR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fine other citites to move to, Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, Nashville, and even Birmingham. Many people need to start adding other cities in their relocation plans instead of Atlanta. I'm tired of hearing, "I wanna move to Atlanta." There several cities in the US that are much better than Atlanta and have way more opportunities than Atlanta. Because Atlanta is so darn huge in turns of economy, it suffers more because large corporations may close or downsize. Isn't Atlanta the "hub of the South?" It won't last long because you have cities like Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, Miami, New Orleans, Birmingham, and Nashville who are doing pretty well. I would pick Houston because it seems to have a nice job market that is almost recession proof. Atlanta's job market is sort of failing simply do to it's status in the South...."THE HUB."
