The Latin Americans guys in my office usually go non-stop from Atlanta.

I'm very familiar with the Delta Airlines routes to Latin America & The Carribean & they have non-stop connections to all of Latin America from the Atlanta Hub. So I don't see it being a problem with communting to Latin America from Atlanta. Delta has expanded their Latin American & Carribean operations over the last few years to great success.
With the emergence of spirit airlines in ft. Lauderdale connecting to many latin american countries and the amount of other airlines that are national carriers of foreign latin american countries flying out of mia I believe you will have more choices out of south florida with prices, flt times, etc.
Basically with Atlanta you have only one airlines and out of south fl you have many out of mia. I can't stand the miami airport though! Delta' international terminal is much smoother. Its your choice. My two cents

I'm going to Peru in December. Delta only has one non-stop per day. None of the other airlines have non-stops from Atlanta to Peru. We're going to have a connecting flight in Ft. Lauderdale.
I agree with Atlanta's finest, I hatethe Miami airport and avoid it if at all possible.

We usually pay just a little more for Delta's nonstop to Guatemala than the hassle of Miami or Houston connections. Easy three hour flight.

Is price an important factor to you at all? If so, no matter how much you hate MIA... it's cheaper.
We are looking at going to Costa Rica in December... flights to San Jose out of basically any Florida airport are 204-223 round trip, taxes included. That's on American Air... an airline I trust way more than Spirit.
Spirit runs sales out of both ATL and Florida airports to Latin America... but my experience with Spirit was awful. Really awful. Rude, disorganized, very very limited seating at those deals.
If you want the "ease" of using Hartsfield... which is a joke to me, but anyway, if it's easier to use ATL than use ATL. If you're concerned with price, use Florida airports.

Using the Florida airports are well and good, but for the OP' original concern about commuting I'm sure we all would agree that using Delta Airlines is the best option. When I think of a "commute", I want the quickest door to door route possible. In that case Atlanta is the best option for a person "commuting" to and from Latin America. They offer non-stops to all of Latin America which can cut your door to door commute less than half the time you would spend connecting in Miami or Ft. Laud airports.
