Cherokee could be tough sell on transit vote *| ajc.com

A public-private project to add toll lanes to I-75/I-575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties could wind up on the final list of projects the tax would fund.
So, as a resident of Cherokee County they want me to pay an extra cent of sales tax AND pay to use the road they build with the money??? What's wrong with this picture?

Well you are going to have to pay for it anyways to get ready! Thanks for providing the metro region with your additional pennies. We need it!

That you are surprised that if the bill passes you would have to pay for both?

FYI, this is not a first. It pretty much happens every where....except Red China and Soviet Russia.

If it's a toll road it should be self-sufficient.

Yes I know that never happens. But that doesn't make it any less annoying.

A statistic in this article fascinated me:

"Nearly eight of every 10 Cherokee County workers drive out of the county to jobs"

That sounds incredible. I'm embarrassed to admit that, even though I've lived in Marietta & Atlanta my whole life, I'm not that familiar with Cherokee County overall. Is it really, to this degree, a giant bedroom community? I've visited downtown Woodstock a few times and it's really nice. I'm surprised that the county hasn't attracted a business center of its own (like Cobb has) so that people could live closer to their jobs.

I'm not trying to attack Cherokee. I'm just a little stunned by the commuting stats here.

I am surprised it's that high, and would like to see the claim substantiated. The article only said "by some estimates" and didn't cite any sources, so to me it is suspect.

But I have no trouble believing it's over 50%. There is no big business center that I can think of nearby. Most of that commuting is likely from south Cherokee to Cobb County (which is what I do). "Bedroom community"? Yeah I suppose so, but is that much different from Forsyth?

And yes, downtown Woodstock is nice....thats one reason I live here.

Yeah, that 8 out of 10 figure is out of whack. 2009 Census data show:

It's true, Cherokee is a true bedroom county.

Don't feel bad though, I've lived in Atlanta my whole life too and know very little about Cherokee county. I'm even struggling to think of when I have done anymore than drive through it.

Like I said in the Fayette thread, it would be great to see those adjusted for salary. Typically, the suburban bedroom-community type places have more low wage service jobs, and the people making big bucks and drive the economy are the ones who drive to Cobb or Fulton every day.

There are a few single story office parks and medical facilities in the county, but that's about it for high paying jobs. I-575 is a traffic nightmare in the morning and evening. Cherokee County residents will be shooting themselves in the foot by not voting to improve that situation.
