I will be relocating to the Atlanta area from Californai, most likely to Grayson. I will be transferring with my current employer and I have the choice of two locations....either Sugar Hill/Buford or Lithonia/Stonecrest mall area. I would like to know which commute would be better. I have searched for directions and it seems that I will be right in the middle of both locations (approximately 19 miles from each). However, I know that depending on traffic, there can be a big difference in the amount of time that it will take to get there. Also, I would like to get information on alternate routes, if anyone has that information. And lastly, any opinions on Grayson vs other nearby locations would be greatly appreciated.

From the Grayson area, Lithonia is definitely the easier drive. Not that either drive is bad, they will just be slow during the rush hour. Plan on about 45 mins to Buford and about 30 to Lithonia. Grayson is a very nice area. Growing rapidly and has all the amenities close by. Can be to downtown in about an hour or so during the week, 45 mins on the weekends...

Smile Relocating to Grayson

I work in the Grayson area and live close by. You're right about being in between. The traffic will be a little less harrying coming from Stonecrest due to the delayed development in that area. It's coming up fast, but the north side is saturated and you're driving through some pretty jammed up areas to get to the Buford area. Without a doubt, Stonecrest.
Grayson is a great place to live and invest. If you're planning to purchase right away, you have a large area to draw from. Lilburn, Snellville and Grayson are all the same distance away from Stonecrest. Just different routes. Be sure to invest in a great school district. It will be a key factor in your appreciation. The commute Grayson to Sugar Hill would be longer. If you drive Highway 20 past the Mall of Georgia, the evening commute during holiday season would be horrible.

Why not just live in Sugar Hill? I would prefer Sugar Hill over Grayson.

1)Sugar Hill is closer to the North Georgia Mountains
2)Sugar Hill is closer to Lake Lanier
3)The Sugar Hill Golf Club
4)Closer to Mall of Georgia for shopping
5)Closer to Freeways 985 & 85,much easier to access Atlanta on the weekends
6)North Gwinnett High had an average Sat of 1546 vs. 1526 for Grayson High
7)North Gwinnett High was the top ranked Gwinnett High school in the Newsweek magazine list(based on AP data)
8)Sugar Hill is closer to the Dawsonville outlet mall

Also the commute to either Lithonia or Sugar Hill from Grayson will be mostly smaller back roads. These roads are frequently only 2 lanes and are very poorly lit at night (very unlike California where they have great street lights).

Lithonia may be a better commute to Grayson... But as others mentioned you will be taking side roads such as Turner Hill/78 to get to and from Grayson. Sugar Hill/Buford is really congested during Rush Hour......

Thanks to all who replied. You all gave me some good information.

Sugarloafing,
Thanks for the insight on Sugar Hill. I will look into Sugar Hill as well when I visit next week. I have never visited that area but have heard many good things about it. I have children, so schools are also very important to me. You really gave me something to think about
