So I have lived in the Atlanta area for the last 10 years. I was in Vinings for 1 and in Peachtree City the last 9. I have been thinking lately, especially since I work downtown, that I would like to try urban living.

I have never really lived in a downtown area but there is so much more to do here and when my wife and I go out, we usually wind up down here anyway.

I want to rent until we find the right fit but need to find the best school for my two daughters (8 and 5) and would prefer a townhouse or single family.

Any suggestions? If it matters we are white and in our late 30's. I don;t think it does but people on this forum seem to mention race quite a bit.

Thanks for any input.

Are you meaning downtown only or other ITP neighborhoods as well?
Also what would your rent/home purchase budget be?

Your race does not matter but how diverse the community is can be an issue if it matters to you. If you are considering intown living, I assume you are open to a racially diverse community but since you mention white, I also assume you are not looking for a predominately black community.

3 Bedrooms, schools (private or public) and budget will be the major drivers

very much open to a diverse neighborhood but certainly do not want to be the only white family on the street.

I was thinking public school. I went to private as a kid and not sure that is something I want for mine.

Open to ITP as well. Would love 4 bedrooms but 3 would work, would like to stay under $2500. Might go higher for a place with real character.

Grant Park or Candler Park come to mind first for families, although I am not familiar with the rental market in those areas.

This has been proven false over and over.

Is the Morningside/Inman/Grady group really that bad?

According to people who send their kids there - - NO.

According to people who have no first hand experince with those schools - - YES.

I would research the schools if you plan to use public schools. Greatschools.net is a good place to start. Unfortunately, many of the public schools in the city are known to be under performing (low standardized test score averages).

Also, what type of home do you like? high-rise living? condos, townhomes or single-detached houses, that would matter some in your research.

Parts east of downtown or Buckhead come to my mind for what you describe.

Good luck in your search!
