I was listening to my favorite raido station 96 ROCK (i'm old school, it will always be 96ROCK to me!) and a guy called in the other day and said Tara Blvd was shut down for the filming of The Walking Dead. I would have loved to seen that! That became my second favorite show last year.

I was an supposed to be an extra and they wanted to use my car for a scene in "the Change up", which was filmed at Phipps plaza and NorthPoint Mall in Alpharetta these last few days. When I said supposed to, it because I got there and then left after hearing the terms. Of course when they book you on the phone, they dont tell you anything besides the location and time you need to be there. To tell you the truth I cant believe anyone wants to be an extra except some college or high school kids that have nothing better to do. When they mentioned it in the paper they said up to $200 to use your car for between 8-12 hours and you could leave and pick up the car when they were done. If you wanted to be an extra and got chosen it was something like $8 an hour. I get there and they tell me $30 for my car and I have to stay there until they are done, even if I dont get chosen as an extra. I told them to screw off and left as I had to get there at 5:30 pm and they told me shooting would end sometime after 1 am. Good thing I did, turns out they were there until 8 am. From 5:30-8am for a measly $120? For potentially a 3 sec scene in a movie? Really, you think you are going to be discovered as the next star for a movie by being an extra? I am all for the movie business coming here as long as they are stimulating the economy, but for the amount of tax incentives we are giving, are we really benefiting when the extras from GA are getting paid so little and the main stars get millions which they take back to Cali and pay taxes there?

I don't think most people expect to make much money as an extra. I think most do it either for just the thrill or for the experience. About a year ago they filmed a movie or at least part of it (I think it was a Christian movie of some sort) down in Bainbridge, Ga. They turned most of Downtown into the 1950's and had lots of people bring their 50's era vehicles to be in the scenes. A friend of mine said he was still able to go down to his favorite local pool hall and shoot pool during filming but only if he wore 50's era clothes and hairstyle. I don't remember if people were compensated for bringing their old vehicles down or not but I think most that did did it just for fun.

It's kind of like the women models they use in music videos. I saw a story about them before and most get paid very little if any money at all. They mostly do it hoping the exposure and experience will land them more lucrative acting and modeling gigs.

People actually HAVE been discovered by Hollywood by just being extras, but it is rare and shouldn't be expected. The going rate for non-speaking rolls is around $100 per day. Not sure what it is for using your stuff, though.

I wonder how tough it actually is to get a spot as an extra on one of these productions? Does anybody have any experience or know someone who has done it? Are any of those job postings you see everywhere screaming for extras and models legit?

This would be a great gig for me at the moment.

Try Bill Marinella Casting or Extras Casting Atlanta. I friended them on facebook, and that's how I found out about the extras they needed for the Change Up. I would be leery of craigslist ads and that sort of thing. I'm sure there are hustlers trying to make a buck off of people. Good Luck!

Thanks. I'll look into those. I also just found out that one of my friends has actually been doing some extra work so I'll try to pick his brain a little.
