Clayton County
I am considering a position in Jonesboro (Clayton County). Does anyone have an opinion of this area-good or bad? I am traveling from a suburb south of Chicago.

I live in Fayetteville, Clayton County, and I am right around the corner from Jonesboro. It's really nice out here. The nicer parts of Clayton county are in south Clayton County such as Hampton, Love Joy, and Jonesboro (anywhere off of Hwy 54 and near Lake Spivey and Walt Stephens Road). I would steer away from Jonesboro near Flint River Road or Tara Blvd near Hwy 138 before you get to Hwy 54. Clayton County gets a bad rep, but, just like anywhere else in Georgia, there are good parts and bad parts.
What kind of position is this if I may ask?

Wow - a Chicago to Jonesboro commute? That's like - 12 hours EACH WAY! (sorry, HAD to).
I would assume you MEANT, that you'll be MOVING down here and taking a job in jonesboro (?).
Jonesboro has some very rough areas. Clayton County as a whole has seen a rise in crime over the last few years. Working there during the day should be ok unless it's in the worst of the areas, but as far as living there, you'd want to avoid it.
Look south of there at the communities of Fayetteville and Peachtree City for two of the nicer southside burbs.

Just as I keep saying on these posts about Clayton County, there are good parts and bad parts of each county; Clayton County isn't bad as a whole. I wouldn't discount it completely; just like there are parts of Cobb County or Douglas County I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole (which ever county you live in).

There, of course, are good and bad parts of south suburban Chicago (Remember the song, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Jim Croce, circa 1972). Clayton County doesn't sound that much differerent, in this respect, than any other place in the U.S.

Jonesboro is a densely populated city, primarily in the northern and central portion. C-Tran is part of the regional transit system. Affordable housing is abundant. You may find Clayton County to be very similar to the south suburbs of Chicago in some ways. I say this because I have lived in Clayton County for a number of years and am also from the south suburbs of Chicago.

Clayton County has a very dense population in the more northern portions in the cities of Jonesboro, College Park, Riverdale, Morrow, and Forest Park, but as you go further south, it thins out quite a bit.
The far SouthWest part of Clayton County is comprised of Hampton and Fayetteville which have some of the nicest, but still affordable homes (under $300k) in the south suburbs. This area is also referred to as the "Panhandle" of Clayton County. The main road that runs through this area is also called Panhandle.
There are beautiful parks and lakes and golf courses in this area, as well.
There are some nice recreation and acquatic centers in Clayton County, as well, including "Atlanta Beach" which is an artificial beach with a wave pool.
Hope you come check it out, that is the only way to make a good decision.
I am also from the south suburbs of Chicago and feel that Clayton County is very similar to my "home" community in Chicago.

just curious what south suburb you are all from, to think it reminds you of chicago? I grew up in the western burbs of chicago and my Husband grew up on the south side of chicago.. And we don't find that it reminds us at all of the chicago area?... I agree with the pp about fayettville part being very nice.
