As a resident within metro Atlanta, where do you go to the beach?

In the poll above, include beaches that you've been to within the past five years.

I'm not a native of Atlanta but I've lived here for almost a year. Last time I went to a beach while I was living here was like a week after I moved down. I went to Myrtle Beach. Not a bad beach but not my favorite.

Lots of my co-workers go to Alabama for the beach.

My next beach trip is already planned for Ocean City, MD.

We go to Amelia Island every 4th of July. I spent all my summers in St.Marys GA, so we visit with old friends, when were there. You didn't list Cumberland Island but we usually take a day trip while we're on Amelia.

We try to go to Ocracoke, OBX, every other year. Golf carts are hot on Ocracoke now, so we usually trailer ours from PTC.

Went to Tybee two weekends ago, really like Beach Colony resort there.

We have Disney time-share on HHI, so we usually go every other year. On the years we don't go to HHI, we go to Vero.

I prefer EC Of FL, to the Gulf.

I really would like to see what the big fuss with OBX is about, we are really anxious to go one of these fine summers.

I went to Tybee for the first time this weekend. I will not be going back. I was shocked with how trashy the place was and how trashy the people were. I get it is a long weekend, but some of the loud conversations between adults in front of children were truly shocking. My favorite was the drunk woman at 1PM getting in an argument with who I think was her mom over "I ain't never got no DUI. That was your other daughter. I ain't never got caught like that." I thought they were going to come to blows over it. It made Jerry Springer look civilized. I wish that was that only instance of such low class 'redneckery,' but sadly it wasn't. The beach was ok, not great, but the amenities on the island sucked. I know they have tried to keep it more local and low-key, but damn... has anything been built or updated on that island in the last 30 years?

I really enjoy the Florida panhandle much better with the Pensacola Beach area being my favorite. I also enjoyed the Outer Banks very much when I lived up in VA. That was a 2.5 hour drive from my home there. It was nice, but I'm not sure I'd vacation there from Atlanta. That is a long drive for beaches that aren't any nicer than the FL panhandle. It is nice though, but traffic can be insane getting on/off the islands.

I am surprised Tybee is the highest on the list unless people are counting a day trip when taking a vacation to Savannah or something. Hilton Head isn't much further than Tybee and is a much nicer area.
