It may be a different story for someone from a place like Hiram or Buford. Also, I have noticed that many baby boomer Atlantans have accents, even if they are from Buckhead.
Grew up in Cobb. I am in my mid 30s.

Think of the South, geographically, and then think of a small dot on the map encompassing perhaps a third of the area of metro Atlanta. That's the area where you won't find a noticeable southern accent. Then, furthermore, consider that only young adults and younger within those areas don't have an accent.

From what I can see, the southern accent is well and alive in Paulding County, Cherokee County, most of Cobb County, Douglas County, practically the whole south side, Rockdale and Newton Counties, extreme north Gwinnett, south Gwinnett, Walton Counties, and all the exurban areas. Only in north Fulton, much of Dekalb, Norcross and Duluth in Gwinnett, intown Atlanta, and east Cobb do you find the southern accent waining, in my opinion.

No. Just, no. This is beyond ridiculous.

Yes, I do consider Birmingham to be something. The southern Birmingham suburbs offer a fantastic atmosphere and quality of life. A million plus metro is something.

What a thought provoking response. Do you ever actually engage in the debate, or are these dramatic, theatrical reponses all you can manage?

Well, I don't, and there are thousands of Atlanta residents who would never live in Birmingham. I have visited Birmingham a few times, and while Mountain Brook is nice, there is absolutely no comparison to Atlanta.

How did a really positive post about Hollywood's discovery of the "new" Atlanta turn into a debate about the carving on Stone Mountain and the causes of the Civil War?!?!?!

For what it's worth, and to the OP, quite a few TV shows filmed in Atlanta now are actually set in California, most notably "Drop Dead Diva" and "Teen Wolf" -- which I think is HE-LARIOUS!!! It's about time we got payback for all those years of California trying to pass itself off (very poorly) as Georgia!

I remember very clearly this episode of Matlock when his assistant had to go find a suspect in the projects and during the chase scene they show a set of mountains in the background behind the project buildings that looked nothing like Atlanta housing projects of course. LOL.

Yes, let's get back to the Hollywood debates. And it all started with my suggestion that Stone Mountain be placed across Stone Mountain...lol.HA!!

You know, Vancouver sells itself as a movie locale very well. My mother's always watching Lifetime, and it seems as if every freaking show is produced in Canada. Or perhaps Lifetime is based in Canada. I am not going to take the time to find out...lol. Do you think that Atlanta will join L.A. and Vancouver in the next decade as a prime locale for film and television series? It also seems as if New Orleans is holding its own in developing quality shows, so there's a little bit of competition, I would guess. (See Treme on HBO)

It seems like most of HGTV is Canadian. Atlanta is pretty strongly represented on HGTV, too. Granted, HGTV isn't exactly Hollywood, but it is TV exposure in which Atlanta is shows in a positive light.
