Actually DON'T go to Kudzu.com! I went with King Green because they had tons of great reviews on Kudzu. It wasn't until after I signed up that I found out they give you a $25 credit toward your account for reviewing them on Kudzu. I am so naive; I didn't know companies did that.
King Green has been pretty mediocre, IMO. I chose them because of the kudzu reviews and the deal they had on Kudzu that made them the absolute cheapest around. A neighbor has a small company and does every great looking yard in the 'hood. I wish I had used him instead and will switch next season. His rates are competitive. I don't know how far north he goes (he is located between Dunwoody and Brookhaven). His name is Richard and the his company is Greenblades Turf Care (770) 256-1479.

That's the company I use!
But like i said in a previous post in this thread, I don't think he goes that far north. I guess it won't hurt to give him a call.
I did what an earlier poster recommended, I looked at the best looking lawns in the subdivision and noticed that many where done by the same company, Mobile Joe's- had Joe over for a quote which was substantially less than who I was using. They have been doing our yard for the past two months and it looks the best it has since we moved here a little over a year ago. When asking around, I heard of lower prices, but the results were not what I wanted.
Also, when you move here from northern states, you have to realize that yards here are completely different. Plus, the soil is miserable to work with and grow things in.
Sorry for sounding so ignorant, but i moved from a town home in Chicago (maintenance free) to a single family home with a sizable back yard in altanta where the weeds are getting out of control. I had no idea what crab weeds were until i moved to Atlanta. I kinda miss my townhome where i didn't have to worry about this stuff. Do all of you use a company like trugreen for just the lawn maintenance but treat the dirt bed maintenance yourself? What kind spray works the best from Home Depot?
Geez.. my HOA is anal. I already got my 1st warning from my HOA. Letter said something like this "In order to keep the highest home value in our community, you need to take care of your weed problem.....
Nothing like being thrown into a weed of fire.
Mr. Panda,
I rest my case. You let it go out of innocence. It's not a crime but, the longer you let go, the harder, and more expensive, it will become. The stuff at Home Depot can work but, after you calculate the cost and time, it's hardly worth it. Expect to pay $40-$60 per treatment depending on the size of the greenspace. Like I mentioned, if you work with the company, together you will keep it under control.
Look at the bright side, you now HAVE a yard. That can be good and bad, probably depends on what you want more. The thing that most people don't realize is that....you HAVE a yard....you have to take care of it and for most people, these yards are much bigger than those they had growing up.....again, staying on top of it IS the key. Changing companies is more like rearranging furniture on the Titanic. They ALL use the same chemicals and it ultimately comes down to the guy that applies and the weather he is applying it under....kind of like getting tires...the experience is only as good as the knucklehead that mounts them....and Michellin, Goodyear, Pirelli ad nauseum have nothing to do with it.
Just ask UPFRONT what their re-treatment policy is...most good ones will tell you they will keep coming back, NO CHARGE if they have to....don't expect it to look like Pebble Beach but, it certainly will be maintained....look around your subdivision...note all the pretty lawns...obviously, it's achievable.....if the HOA is calling, it's bad. You can buy some chemicals that you can spray in beds that will actually help PREVENT the growth in weeds (just can't remember the name)....it's usually orange in color.....the beds can actually be more of a pain to take care of than the lawn....If your budget will allow, add another post emergent and pre-emergent treatment with a broadcast spreader (liquid, end of hose) and saturate thoroughly....aerate annually and get as dense a bermuda as possible...the denser it is, the less weeds you will have.....
Welcome to Atlanta.....you can bring it under control...
Roxyn, I have an appointment with Mobile Joe's tomorrow. Can i ask how much your service is per month? Do they require a 1 year contract?
Thanks.

Talked to Richard and he doesn't go up this far. I think i need a full service where they will even pull the weeds, cutting the grass, and fertilizing as it is getting to the point where I can't handle it on my own.
If anyone knows of any owner operatoring full service lawncare in the Alpharetta, Duluth, Johns Creek, Suwanee, I would love to hear your referrals.

Your Best bet (What I did) I Drove round my Sub/Div and look'ed at lawn's i liked, I then asked the owner who did there lawn. Those are the one I called. They are in your Sub/Div. And based on what they did for the houses your saw, you liked them.
Mr. Panda- no contract with Mobile Joe's and I have to say, after just two months, my yard is fantastic- looks and feels like a golf course. I have over an acre with lots and lots of landscaping which requires a lot of work and they have done a good job so far and are very reliable.
Like I previously said, for the first year, I was paying way too much (but had stupidly signed a one year contract) and during that time, checked out the rest of the subdivision for who did the best job, prices and neighbor satisfaction. MJ is not the cheapest, but our yard had been neglected by previous owners and really needed some help to get it looking good. We had gotten warning letters from HOA regarding weeds/mulch. (mulch is a cost I never factored in when buying my house, but I need over 350 bales so that is quite a hefty expense).
Your neighbors probably know of a good service. Did you ask them yet?
I definitely dislike lawn care, but I think in your area, you will find a good, reliable lawn care company. There is a lot of competition for your business.
Yes, the weeds grow fast when we get these summer rains, no doubt.
