Hi,
My son, who has recently moved to Atlanta to attend Emory, is thinking of getting a scooter to get to and from his classes. Can you tell me what your experiences with scooters have been in the Atlanta area? Are Atlanta drivers willing to share road space with scooters? What about thefts?
Thanks for your responses.

Atlanta drivers aren't willing to share the road with anyone. I'd use scooters for zipping around campus but certainly not the city of Atlanta. One of, if not the highest 'road rage' cities in the nation. Maybe others have different opinions but having lived here and driven here for so long, I'd let him take the shuttle.

No.
Don't even think about it.

I had a scooter for about a month (a buddy was out of town and let me borrow it). I didn't really feel unsafe at all riding around Atlanta. I went all over intown Atlanta and felt fine. The only problem I had was on bigger roads I sometimes felt like I was slowing people down because I couldn't go as fast as they wanted me to, other then that I had no problems. People seemed to even drive a little more careful when they were near me. The guy who owns the scooter loves it and uses it to get all around town (he doesn't have a car). He has a very expensive lock to keep it secure but I see a lot of people who don't even bother locking theirs up at stores and such so I can't imagine there is too much theft of them.

Everyone's experience will vary. I had a roommate a while back when I lived intown who had one and he got rid of it, due to the above mentioned "I can't go fast enough" deal and cars would get too close to him trying to make him "speed up" (and he couldn't). He upgraded to a regular motorcycle but after a couple of close calls retired it to a garage to just use on outings to the more rural areas, and bought a small car to use intown.

My wife and I had one when we lived in the City of Denver. It was awesome. Having said that, I would NOT drive one in THIS city. Drivers are too agressive.

Ooo boy. I wouldn't ride a scooter here. The roads are all bendy and filled with insane people. :-(

It probably depends on the route he'd be taking. Some places it might be fine, while other places would require courage and quick reactions.

Of a scooter? Most people would be afraid to drive it away. :-)
